The planting of fir tree stock ¡ costs about $12 per acre, and one good ' man will plant between 400 and 500 trees in a day. They are placed about 12 feet apart. There never has been a fire in this plantation, but the truth remains, that if a fire were to ocur, it would mean the loss of the small trees. Trees planted in 1912 are now from 12 to 15 feet in height, and furnish limbs suff iciently large for mattresses for the beds of workmen. A good stand of second growth timber will show a growth annually of about 1,000 board ieft per tree. This applies to ter ritory in the Northwest, and along the Pacific coast in Oregon and Washing- ton, and eastward to the Cascade ange. The bulk of natural second growth timber is found on the north slopes, due to the fact that the south Jopes dry out sooner, and are more • ubject to fire. There are eight guard stations in the district, all of which are furnished with telephones, good horse trails, and fire finding apparatus.
