RATHER A WEIRD STORY
Thos. Coates was in a reminiscent
mood theother day and told about a
schooner that was sailed into Netarts
bay one day during the year 1896.
The schooner was load' d with a three
year supply of goods to be used in
the Klondike region in Alasku and
was manned by the captain, whose
name he had forgotten anil a woman
who was supposed to be his wife. The
goods were disposed of to Goo. Phelps
of Netarts who made an advantageous
buy. After selling the goods the
schooner was left at Netarts and the
captain and his wife came over to
Tillamook where the woman soon
gave birth to a child. The captain
sought Mr. Coats and dictated a
weird letter tn him which wus in the
nature of an explanation to the cus
toms authorities at Portland relating
why he hail entered the bay at Ne
tarts instead of calling at Astoria.
The story was that he had bought the
ship and supplies in San Francisco
and that three nien had gone with
him to a port in Alaska where they
mutinied and confined him in a room;
that his wife hud somehow procured
a revolver anil had driven the men
ashore and that subsequently they had

resulted. The original investment by
Mr. Patterson consisted of tw< pa r
of Silver foxes and one pail of cross
breds, a mixture of silver and red.
The silver foxes were purchased last
fall from the National Fox Co. of Spo
kane, Washington and last December
Mr. Patterson began his experiment
of fox breeding in this county with
the result that he now has fourteen
fox puppies of varying size and age.
Not one has been lost, every litter do
ing well. The silvers, male and fe
male, cost $1,000 j^ach. The cross
breds cost $100 each. Next winter
when the fur is prime the pups will
be killed and the fur of the breeds
will bring from $80 per hide up. The
silvers would bring about $500 each
but they will be hept for breeding

the mills do not own their own log
ging camps, and the log supply is not
certain. The camps are ail running
in this county. Even the week of the
Fourth did not set back the mills with
their sawing as most of the ponds and
booms were full. The supply of the
Columbia river mills with logs is be
ginning to worry mill men. Log rafts
are being sent up from Yaquina bay
and it may be that Tillamook timber
owners will likewise resort to the log
raft as u means of marketing surplus
logs along the Columbia.
The competition caused by the big
sawmills at Longview in Washington,
is said to be a big factor in the log
shortage on the Columbia.

a romance. He paid for the copy of
the report and left for Portland but
really went to New York, leaving the
mother and child behind. The woman
however, soon followed him and there
they dropped out of sight. The story
got out, however and soon a crew ap
peared at Netarts from San Francis
co who proved property and sailed the
schooner back to that port. They told
a different story about the matter. It
seems that the three men who were
driven from the schooner were the
real owners of both the vessel and
cargo and that they were driv
en ashore by th<- captain and the wo
man after which the twuin hoisted an
chor and sailed away, later arriving
at Netarts. The captain was a bril
liant fellow well educated, but was an
unprincipled scoundrel and the woman
who was described as being very beau
tiful was the wife of a barber in Sun
Francisco who becoming enamoured
of the dashing captain fled with him
to the north and then followed him to
the east. The feat of the man and
woman sailing the schooner from Al
aska down the wind swept wastes of
the North Pacific and crossing an un
charted bar into a small bay of the
Oregon coast was of itself a feat of
seamanship worthy of u better man.
While in Tillamook, the pseudo own
er of the ship hud plenty of money
which it was later learned belonged
to miners whom he plundered und
drove ashore at the point of a gun.
