; ers in the movement promised prac-
■ tical assistance to farmers in their en

and their other organizations. *.»
: part of the state development pro
; gram, the chamber voted to raise a
1 fund of $300,000, a considerable part
: of which was to be expended in of-
; forts directed specifically toward in.-
: provement in the condition of the
I farmers of the state.
That would have been a big step
; for organized industry to take. It
; seemed to indicate unusual insight on
! the part of Portland’s business inter-
i: ests into the essentials of prosperity.
;
But for some time there has been
; more or less evidence that all was
! not well with the progress of that
; high-minded program. Many among
: those who placed faith in it at the
; outset have become skeptical of the
I sincerity behind it as originally ovt-
9 ; lined.
In this connection certain questions
? I will not down.
For example, why is that $300,000
! state development fund so slow in ac-
I cumulating ? We understand that not
a third of it is yet subscribed and
that the whole proposition is some
what shelved, at least for the time
being.
Why did the Portland Chamber of
Commerce oppose the anti-alien land
ownership bill in the recent legisla-
ture? That bill was wanted badly
by the farmers of the state who must
compete under present conditions
with oriental producers.
Why did the agricultural commit
tee of the chamber of commerce re
fuse to indorse the dairymen’s bill in
the legislature prohibiting the adult
eration of milk and butter by the mix
ing therein of cocoanut oil or other
vegetable fats ?
What constitutes the Associated
Industries of Oregon, the organiza
:> tion that is credited with leadership
in bringing a referendum against the
dairymen’s bill just mentioned ? What
if any, is the relationship between
the Associated Industries and the
Portland Chamber of Commerce.
1 Some way or other, actions in these
cases harlly seem to square with
promises, and the farmers of Oregon
would like to know if the above case?
are fair samples of what may be ex
pected in the way of future aid from
the business interests of Portland.—
Oregon Farmer.
It should not take long for anyone
who cares to make the observation to
decide that the modern automobile is
a contender for first place and is eas
ily the victor over the home. There
are any number of people who never
hesitate to enter into an iron-clad par
tial payment plan of owning an auto
mobile who would think you crazy to
ask them to do as much towaids own
ing a home. It is simply the result
of evolution and the continual cry
against high taxes. People are gun
shy of real estate because of the be-
lief that they will be taxed to death,
yet they will not hesitate to buy an
automobile, which deterioiates faster
than any known serviceable commodi
ty on the market. And talk about
taxes, we wonder if anyone ever fig
ured up the cost of owning an auto
mobile. If they did they would never
howl against taxes on a home. We
admire the man who puts his money
into an automobile because it is put
ting it where the whole family can
get some of the benefit, but there is
a question as to the wisdom of own
ing an automobile and paying rent
for a home. It is burning the ean-
die at both ends.—Coos Bay Harbor.
