Dalle-s Post wants to hear from
the acquatic stars of Oregon who
belong to the American Legion. A
three day water carnival will be held
here during the week of conventions
next month, and Don W. Yantis, who
used to hang up records for himself,
is in charge. Dallis Post and local
business men will offer prizes fol
the winners, and it is hoped to es-
tablish a custom which will last as
long as there are enough legion
members left with enough limber
joints to take to the water.
The prizes have not yet been an
nounced. but they will be substan
tial enough to attract the best swim
mers. The Columbia is a mile wide
at The Dalles, and ambitious swim
mers can paddle all the way down to
Astoria if they want to. so there is
plenty of space for all competitors.
There will be swimming events for
women too. The Posts catchword for
the convention is "Bring your uni
form”, but equally well it can urge
legionnaires to bring bathing suits
too.

Legionnaire» attending the Na-
tional Convention in New Orleans,
will encounter more history to the
square inch than in any other city
in America. To the ex-fighter the
famous old port city will reveal the
marks of two centuries of spirited
existence, inspired by the deeds of
ex-servlc men of other days. Founded
by Bineville in 1718, New Orleans
has been under the French flag
twice; the colors of Spain have
floated over the city, the stars and
Bars of the Confederacy, and final
ly the Stars and Stripes of the Un
ited States.

a nationwide membership d<-ive from
July 5th to 27th. The purpose 1» to
enroll ex-service men who have not
yet identified themselves with the
legion and its work.
Harry N. Nelson. Adjutant of the
American Legion in Oregon, has an-
nounced that a supreme effort will
be made to double the membership
in Oregon. At present the Oregon
j Department of this great national
organiznation has enroUed lees thin
one-third of the eligibles.
The American Legion is composed
of men and women who were in the
service of the United States during
the World War. It admits to its
ranks all who served regardless of
the place or conditions of servile.
While it is designed to keep alive
the associations growing out of the
war, and to express upon the life of

value to the country lies in stimu
lating patriotism and sound sacrific
ing Americanism. The American I.e
gion will be to the country during
the next three Quarters of a century
what the Grand Army of the R>pub-
’ie lias been in the p u-.. Therefore
its influence for sound at i liberal
Americanism is certain to be perma
nently recorded in the national con-
siousness of the nation.
It is the duty of every ex-se'vice
man to join. He should add his point
of view to the legion's activities and
thus express in civil life the spirit of
service to country ¿¡splayed in the
national crisis.

Veterans of the American Legion
are conducting a m«mbetsh p drive
It is a worthy endeavor. They
helped make big history. They served
and sacrificed for ideals that ought
to be preserved. There is no surer
way to perserve them than through
such an organization as the Ameri
can Legion.
This is reason enough for
membership drive. But there
other reasons. Policy, not Politics,
is a legion slogan. It conveys a
thought of true citizenship. A higher
and higher civic standard is the for
mula that will lift America higher
and higher in civic rightiousness,
economic equality and social justice.
These are the things to make this
nation worthy of the Bufferings and
sorrows that service men endured
in the great war. These ideals can be
greatly forwarded through such an
organization as the legion.
The comradeship of those dread
ful days is worth preserving. As the
time mellows the recollection of the
horrors of 1917-18, and as years
lengthen into decades, that comrade
ship. preserved through the legion j
organization, will be a priceless
privilege to those once in the Euro-(
pean camps and campaigns.
The veteran’s organization should j
be sustained and preserved for it is
a great social university.
