H. 8. BRIMHALL,
Christmas in Tillamook was a
“white one.” The sun shone brave
ly but the day was clear and cool,
with a northeast wind.
The date was quietly observed.
The churches held services coni-
memorative of the birth of Christ,
the Saviour of th» world,
Child-
ren’s exercises were had, and the
usual decorations of green and red
were in evidence. Appropriate ser-
meats were expressed in all the
churches of the
city, and the
Christmas spirit was in evidence.
On this day, it is believed astrologi-
cally, that humanity is much near
er the Christ force than at any oth
er time of the year, hence people
feel the impulse to give and do.
How many little hearts were made
happy on this occasion, will per
haps never be known. A man must
indeed be callous of mind who can
not feel some appreciation of a
time when like Christmas, »elf
should be at least temporarily
shupted to the background, and
the better part of one's nature al
lowed to manifest.
It is a good time to forget hates
and grouches, and to take stock of
one’s self in the turmoil and strife
of life. A man is merely what he
makes of himself. If he goes about
seeking occasion to air his own
troubles, or to “get even," with
some one whom he does not like,
he is thereby loading himself up
with a burden of cause and ef
fect, which later In life may over
whelm his own soul.
The man who never becomes
something of a philospher, usuaJly
goes to a fall. The tobaggan slide
of life is broad, and usually the
track is well greased, and once em
barked upon the perilous journey,
r* flections often come to late. The
best way is to avoid the tobaggan
siiSe. Cultivate harmony.
With the ever-increasing overflow of
civilised populations, northern Rhode
sia soon may be pre-empted by colo
nists. Indeed, the movement of na
tives back to reserves may indicate
that such an inflow already is taking
place. Though it lies across the
equator the Rhodesian plateau is
adapted to the white men by reason of
a climate that has no extremes. More
over, its boom cities of Buluwayo and
Salisbury possess hotels, clubs, busi
ness houses and apartments, built in
the flush of hope that it would be a
second Rand, then deserted by the for
tune hunters, and now waiting the
coming of a more sober and sustained
development
Much of northern Rhodesia is suit
able for farming; there are vast
tracts of grazing land. Maize and to
bacco are at present principal crop«.
Wheat cotton and citrus fruits may be
grown successfully. The timber awaits
transportation facilities. Gold, cop
per, zinc and lead mines already are
worked.—National Geographic Maga-

"But they always fly away before

"Oh, you can catch them by put-

The baby was quiet for a few /

NOT SO BAD, AT THAT
Ireland's Egg Industry.
Ninety million dozen eggs were ex
ported from Ireland lust year. Prices
ranged high, and the value of the
trade waa estimated at over 375,000,-
000. This exceeds the value of the
country's exports of any single manu
factured aitlcle; the cattle trade, in
deed, Is the only one which can show
more imposing figures. Much of the
credit for the improvement that has
taken place In Ireland's poultry trade
is due to the department of agricul
ture. During the last 20 years Its in
structors have taught the farmers and
farmers' wives that, given the neces
sary care and attention, fowls are
among the greatest assets. As the re
sult of scientific treatment, the hen
can become a veritable egg-laying ma
chine. Compared with 1904, the num
ber of birds in Ireland today has in
creased by 88 per cent; yet during the
same period the number of eggs ex
ported from Ireland has increased by
well over 100 per cent.
That, we
think. Is Indisputable proof that the
modem hen is at least twice as valu
able as her ancestor of 16 years ago.—
