BIG CONGRESS IDEA FOUGHT
Washington—Developments in the
last twenty-four hours indicate a
real fight on the lumber schedules
when the new tariff reaches the fiooi
of the house.
At a meeting fifteen states were
represented and it was decided to
make a fight on the floor against
high lumber tariff.
Chairman Fordney when told that
these members intended to try to íe-
commit the lumber schedule declar
ed that the commission would cany
through its policy of protecting the
lumber industry of the Northwest
and would win any contest started
on the floor of the house to put lum
ber on the free list.
Every indication is that the lum
ber fight will be the most spectacu
lar of the whole struggle to enact
a tariff and that the Middle West
farmers will make a supreme but un
availing tight to keep the Northwest
lumber on the free list
Among the fifteen states repre
sented in the conference were North
and South Dakota, Minnesota, Wis

The committe will probably re-
port the bill within the next few
days but a fight on the floor is cer-
tain because the committee is now
dominated by members from the
states which will lose congressmen
if the number of congressmen is
kept at 435:
It is probable that the same fight
that took place last year will bo re
peated as the best information is to
the effect that the committee bill i
will provide for 483 members, the
same bill that was defeated last
year.
