Pascagoula, Miss— a party of
hunters which has Just returned
here from Bayou C»<«>tte reports
that on Saturday the men saw an
alligator prepan» to attack a
weasel, whereupon the weasel,
with remarkable alacrity, leaped
into the 'gator's extended Jaws
and slid down into its stomach.
The hunters say they were as
tonished at tlie actions of the
weasel and awnfted results.
Within fifteen minutes they ob
served the weasel eating its way
through the entrails of the mon
ster.
According to the hunters, the
fondness for eggs prompted the
slender animal to take Ita
chances In the alligator.

New York.—“It’s all Jolly well to
10« k to the government to solve your
parti« ular housing problem, but at die
same time public-spirited men and
women, working Independently, with
the right ideas, can do much toward
ai«ling the government In reducing
this problem to n minimum.”
That in substance is what Mrs.
Henrietta Barnett had In mlntl when,
with others Interested In community
welfare, she established the Hamp*
ste.i'l Garden Suburb, five miles from
Lon «Ion.
“Our village now is a most attrac
tive place," said Mrs. Barnett, at the
Cosmopolitan club, New York, where
she Is staying for a few days before
returning to England. “Hampstead
Gai'len Suburb now has a population
of about lO.ooO. The ground was brok
en for it In 1907 and the present posi
tion of this pioneer experiment of
town extension. In spite of suspension
of building more than six years, is
most satisfactory.”
Many desperate honieseekerg in
New York no doubt would heartily in-
dor e a similar scheme, says the writ*
er if an article published In the Bos*
ton Globe.

land has been more serious than that

co;. •■•:<! task of building 800.000

ous cost of more than $100,000,«100
every year for a period of more than
sixty years. Tlie necessity of shelter
ing homeless people became so
mule that the government adopted
this plan. In 1927 It wijl be consid
ered again by the government. If it
proves practicable, it may be contin
ued : if not. some Improved scheme may
ho substituted for It,
Ender this plan the various munici
palities Issue bonds to cniry out their
particular schemes. Houses thus built
are rented nt the lowest possible rate
and any deficiency beyond a certain
figure Is guaranteed by lhe national
government.
This plan Is helping to meet the
present great and urgent housing
emergency of England.
After long years passed In Universi-
ty settlement work, with her husband,
the noted Canon Barnett, vicar of St.
Judo's Whitechapel, for which they
were the inspiration in Englnnd, Mrs.
Burnett evolved her ideas for a coun
try community in which every family
conlil have its own batli and its own
garden.
“Part of tills village.” Mrs. Barnett
explained, “was built around an open
space of eighty acres. In addition to
the woods there are public garde's,
playgrounds and skeltered seats which
may lie enjoyed by all tlie tenants,
whatever rents they pay.
“The village represents a true com
munity spirit nn«l has been the meins
of promoting a hett< r understand ng
between various «ias-es by arranging
that people with different sizes of In
come jpay live on the estate. It is
not a charity enterprise. It is self sup
porting and has made for the happi
ness and improved health of the fami-
lies who have taken cottages at
Hampstead Garden Suburb.
Health Side Important.
“As women are the home makers
and home dwellers, nnd as the house Is
the shell of the home, women should
have a voice in housing plans. ‘The
Queen Anne style in the front with
the Mary Ann style at the back,’ to
quote Sir Fdwln Lutyens, must not
continue when It means all the beauty
and comfort for the rich and ugliness
and discomfort for the domestic work
er."
Speaking of the health side of the
housing plan known throughout Great
Britain as the “model village," Mrs.
Barnett told how the district medical
officer weighed and measure«! the vil
lage children an<1 found them taller,
heavier nnd broader than those of the
same ace In the city.
“That report was moat gratifying to
me,” Mrs. Barnett commented, “be
cause the pale faces of the little chil
dren of the Whitechapel district with
which my husband and myself were so
familiar, keep haunting me and urging
me on to do something of this kind.
"I believe that the solution of many
of our national differences and diffl-
cult'cs Iles In a more neighborly ntti-
tude. not separation or isolation. Archi
tects too often study how to get as
many people as possible housed in a
small space. It Is hoped that those
concerned with town planning will
consider the natural intermixing of
nil nodal clause» and tlie communion
of the handicapped with the happy.”
