Mr. Glenn E. Plumb has invested

The New York World says the Re
publicans have attempted to turn
the political clock back to 1900. Re
calling what has been done to them
in the past seven years the people
really wish that oculd be done; as
it is, it is up to the Republican party
to wind up and set going the clock
that has been stopped by the bungl
ing of the present national adminis
tration.

“I ant as confident today,” says
President Wilson, “as I was when I
returned from Paris finally in July,”
that the people of the country are for
the Americanized covenant of the
league of nations he brought home
with him. And Mr. Wilson is prob
ably as confident today as when he
wrote Ills famous campaign letter of
1918 that the people of the country
are awaiting an opportunity to give
his administration a vote of confi
dence.
The Oregon Voter—We always
looked to it for good reading and
sometimes good logic, But the best
of them make mistakes, Here comes
the Oregon Voter acknowledging its
unfitness to vote for U. S. Senator.
The editor is a Republican, called
for a Republican ballot and voted for
Robt. Stanfield at the primaries, and
now talks favorably for the demo
cratic candidate. The very thing it
lias before warned against . It also
acknowledges that a vote for the
democratic candidate would be a-
gainst its convictions, and yet pond
ers and hesitates. Poor befuddled
Voter. Pity!—Banks Herald.

Federal officers are raiding fake
oil stock dealers in response to a
flood of letters from persons who have
lost their savings, but while the
raids may result In landing smooth
gentlemen behind the bars it won’t
bring back the easy money they se
cured. If it wasn’t ancient history,
the strangest thing about it is the
ease with which the game is worked
for about all that appears necessary
is ability to write a convincing argu
ment, enough money or credit for
printing and a golden stream com
mences to flow to the faker as soon
as his literature has reached those
on his sucker list. And this, too, in
spite of the fact that dumping gov
ernment bonds on the market has
caused unheard-of low prices, the
conclusion being that holders are
selling a security with the United
States government behind it and in
vesting the money in oil stocks that
some one they never heard of before,
and who may be thousands of miles
away, says will make them rich. It
does--in experience-—but they will
i gorge it and bite again when they
have saved up another stake.—Indé

“The process by which the Chicago
platform was accomplished seemed
to me to have been essentially Prus
I sian
in inspiration and method, '
writes President Wilson. The Chicago
platform followed pretty closely the
lines suggested by conferees repre
senting every element and interest
in the Republican party. President
Wilson's idea of democratic prepara
tion of a platform is to have it writ
ten by himself in the White House,
as the Democratic national platform
of 1916 wa< fill it full of high-
sounding eulogiams of himself for
keeping us out of war and other
: achievements, and then having a
servile party convention swallow it
whole, just as Mr. Wilson tried to
make the United States Senate shoke
down the un-Americanized covenant
of the league of nations.

THE COX DIVORCE MUDDLE
William Jennings Bryan says the
Cox candidacy is an insult to 15,-
000.000 women voters. Still, if Cox
should be nominated, we expect tc.
see Wilyum leading the Democratic
hosts in adding injury to the insult.
As for us, the Cox divorce matter
dosen't. interest us from a political
standpoint. After the women stood
for Wilson we have no doubt they
can stomach Cox. Also, the Coxes
and “us” happen to have very neur
mutual friends. According to these
friends the interesting thing about
i he Cox matrimonial tangle is not his
divorce but the way Mr. Cox and the
first Mrs. Cox live since the divorce.
She has the children and when any
thing happens to them she goes to
the phone and consult him about it.
Or. she did until recently when Mrs.
Cox moved to New York.
"Little
Jimmy had the measles, Jim.
Do
you think we had better send hint
to the hospital or have a nurse'?”
Nearly every day. “they say" one of
the separated pair rings the other up
tho both have since remarried. A
divorce, evidently, is a mere incident
in their young lives.
A peculiar thing about the Cox"-
Harding tangle would be, too. that
the former Mrs. Cox is a relative of
Harding. Since the Chicago conven
tion “our mutual friends" tell
that Mrs. Cox has stated that
"Jim” is nominated by the Demo
crats that she will fight tor Harding.
She will vote tor him anyway, but
If her former busband is nominated,
she will get out and tight for him.
