RUTHERFORD QUITS ------ o------ Eugene Superintendent Tenders Resignation to Board. ------ o------ Eugene, Or., June 9.—W. R. Ruth­ erford, city superintendent of schools tonight tendered his resignation to the board of education, announcing that he had been offered lhe position of assistant director of educational activities of the United States navy at Washington, D. C. The board took the resignation under consideration. The present school fight In Eugene has centered around Mr. Rutherford. Most of the grade teachers signed an agreement several months ago ngt to teach in the local schools it Mr. Rutherford were retained, but the board engaged him for another year. The school fight resulted In a recall election against E. R. Bryson, mem­ ber of the board, which will take place June 21. Mr. Rutherford came here five years ago from the McMinnville schools. He announced tonight that the position offered him by the navy pays him much more than the board here could afford to pay. Tillamook Jersey Calf Club. The first meeting of the Tillamook Jersey Calf Club was held at the Court House, June 12th at 1 o’clock. The meeting was called to order by the President, Edith Miller, and Thelma Hoover, who won the prize for having written the best essay on "The Jersey Calf Club" read it be­ fore the assembly, who proclaimed it veiy good, Indeed. The Constitution and By-laws of the club were then read by Joe Don- uldson and a board of directors elect­ ed. They were: Edith Miller, Pres.; Agnes Blaser, Vlce-Pres.; Schuyler Fletcher, Sec. and Treas.; Joe Max­ well, Velma Daniels, Walter Earl and Edwin Glad. The election of the boaid was fol­ lowed by several speeches by men who are interested in the welfare of the club. Wm. Maxwell spoke of the good that can be accomplished by the organization, and Morrison Mill spoke of the superiority of pure bred cattle, Joe Donaldson spoke about the calves belonging to the members of the Club. The Tillamook Jersey Cattle Club invited the Tillamook Jersey Calf Club to meet with them at the Harry Nelson’s place on the Kelchla river, June 24th. there being no farther business to come before the meeting adjourn­ ment was called. Card Parties to be Given. ------ o------ A series of card parties will be giv­ en by the Catholic Ladles’ Aid Socie­ ty, the first of which will be held at the K. P. hall, on June 24th. Two prizes will be given at each party, and at the end of the series the per­ son winning the most number of gimes will receive the grand prize. After the cards each time there will be dancing.
