One of the timber men last week
wanted to know why the Dougai man
was so anxious to have a road built
from Netarts to Bayocean? Why?
Why? Why?.
That is a bad record for Tillamook
County. Since the 1st of July there
were twelve divorce cases filed and
fourteen marriage licenses issued. If
that speed is kept up we will have tc
admit that marriage is a failure.
The Democratic slogan, “The Presi
dent kept Us out of war,” is about
busted, for it was the president who
nearly plunged the United States in
to war with Germany and it was the
Kaiser who kept us out of war. The
Democrats must think that the peo
ple are blind when they make their
foolish claim.
Notwithstanding that Champ Clark,
speaker of the house, said that the
Maine election gave the Democratic
paity hell, Bro. Trombley is so po
litically blind that he looks upon the
election as a great victory for Wilson.
Gee. If Bro. Trombley wants to make
a political fool of 'himself, lie is per
fectly within his rights to do so.
----- o------
We are now told that the proposal
to build a road from Netarts to Bay
ocean is impracticable. That is what
most of us have known for many
years, but it seems as though some
body wanted to knock or hold up the
Bayocean road. It is not impractictl
to build a road from Netarts to Bay
ocean, but it would be folly to waste
so much money when there is only
three miles of the present road to
build.
It has been suggested that a system
of fire patrol roads be started in Till
amook county, to be used in case of
foest fjrcs. This is a matter that
should receive the serious attention
of the county court and plans made
to bring this about. We feel sure the
people of the county will readily see
the importance of fire patrol roads
into the timber districts. This county
has been fortunate the past few years
in not having forest fires, but we be
lieve in preparedness, and fire patrol
roads would be along this line. Most
of us can recall the serious forest fire
which raged in this county some few
years ago, and the calls for help that
came to this city. It took considera
ble time with teams, buggies and wa
gons to get crowds of men to the
fires, and often they had to walk
several miles. With fire patrol roads
and automobiles, forest fires could he
reached much quicker with the possi
bility of preventing the destruction of
timber. The snap shot man is in hear
ty accord with the suggestion of fire
patrol roads in this county and plans
should be agreed upon as soon as
possible so as to have work started
next year. We would suggest that the
timber men and the business men of
this city and farmers get together,
for this object. The snap shot man
can recall the willingness of a large
number of men who dropped every
thing when calls for help to fight
fire reached this city a few years ago,
and whenever a like call is made we
know there would lie a similar re
spouse, but it would he a great ad-
vantage to them if there were fire
patrol roads.
--------- O-'
We hear a great deal these days
about . people being PH
patriotic to their
own city and section of country. We
want to ask the Democratic brethern
of Tillamook county if they show
patriotism to the county in voting for
a party that placed every industry in
the county practically on the free list?
We would like to discuss this matter
with Bro. Trombley, for it is of great
importance to the dairy, lumber and
fishing industry who is elected presi
dent. We can't see how any person
employed or having interests in
cither of these three industries can
vote for the Democratic free trade
party, and it looks exceedingly unpa
triotic to place the industries of this
county in competition with cheap
lapancse, Chinese and Hindu labor.
That is what the Democratic party
did anil what Bro. Trombley the
Democratic brethern want the people
of this county to vote for in voting
for Wilson. One of the largest indus
tries in the county, the \\ heeler saw
mill, was closed down as a result of
free trade and hundreds of men were
thrown out of employment with hun
dreds of thousands of dollars invest
ed in the saw mill tied up. It is safe
to say that the saw mill at Wheeler
will remain closed down if Wilson is
elected, hut if the G. O. P. is returned
to power it will start running again,
giving employment to hundreds of
men, and will circulate considerable
money in the north part of the coun
ty. This is an object lesson every per
son in Tillamook county should care
fully consider when casting their vote
in November and ask themselves
whether they arc patriotic to their
own section of country.
The snap shot man does not take
any
in , publishing
__ , pleasure
.
_ the past
record, of anyone, hut there are times
when it i* the duty of editors to do
so, for the general public have a
right to know the record of anyone
who is seeking public office, especial
ly the office of district attorney. This
is one of the unpleasant things in
running a newspaper, and we contend
that an editor who is in possession of
information that the public should
know fails in his duty in withholding
it. That was the position the snap
shot man took in exposing the past
record of Wm. Marx last week, not
that we have any personal feeling in
the matter, and as we stated above, it
is an unpleasant duty the snap shot
man had to perforin. We will leave it
to our readers to decide whether we
did right or wrong.
We wish to state that Attorney Cal
lahan is not responsible for what ap
peared in the last week’s Headlight
in this connection. It is true that Mr.
Callahan obtained some of the facts,
and in doing so performed a public
service to the people of the county,
and for that reason he should be com
mended and not criticised. It was
common gossip in the city a week be
fore the snap shot man felt it was his
duty to make the matter public. Just
for argument, supposed we hushed
the matter up and Marx was elected
prosecuting attorney, and the people
found after that we were in possess
ion of the facts that Marx had a
prison record, what would they think
of the snap shot man? Why, they
would think he was a jelly fish editor,
and they would think right. But we
have done our duty to the people of
this county, and likewise Mr. Calla
han, and no one have just grounds to
criticise either. It is a good thing for
the community to turn the search
light on strangers who coine here be
fore falling all over themselves to
place them in responsible public posi
tions. That is simply what we have
done in this instance.

"Is it not the President who has
kept us out of war with Germany. It
is the Kaiser. Mr. Wilson’s notes
have been truculent enough to make
for war over and over again, but
Germany has averted conflict at each
psychological moment out of gon-
sideration of her own welfare, not as
a consequence of any of the many
things the President has written. And,
she has done it in her own sweet way
at her own chosen time. Personally I,
do not believe that we have been in
danger of war at any stage. Nobody
could afford to drag us in and
nobody has done so. That is all there
is of it. If we had convinced all war
ring powers at the outset the we real-,
ly meant to maintain our rights as a
neutral, we would have obtained them
beyond the shadow of a doubt. But
our chillyshallying with Mexico had
indicated all too plainly that they
could play fast and loose with us with
impunity. And they have done it—
both sides.”—Colonel George Harvey
