OWN ROADS.
Marion County Figures Cost at 67
Cents Per Square Yard.
Salem, Or., Sept. 25.—Since the first
of the year Marion County has laid
23,936 .yards of hard surface pave
ment for a total cost of $15,933-86, or
at the rate of 67 cents a square yard.
The cost of a mile $5600 for a 12-foot
roadbed. Figures compiled by the
County Court show that of the 67
cents a yard paid for paving, 15
cents has been for royalties.
This is the first year in which
Marion County has laid its own
pavement,
and the work is being
watched with interest by officials of
other counties.
Students Engage in
Dairying.

Oregon Agricultural College, Cor
vallis, Sept. 27.— Work directly relat
ed to their special training in dairy
ing at the Oregon Agricultural Col
lege is now being performed by 18
members of the 1915 graduating class
and seven members of the 1914 class
constituting the entire number of
dairy graduates for the last two years.
This seems to justify the claim that
graduates of Agricultural Colleges
arc very likely to find immediate em
ployment and go at once into the
practical occupation that the state has
trained them to develop.
It has been the
purpose of the
dairy department officers to place
these graduates in positions advan
tageous to themselves and also to
their employers. Six of the eighteen
are employed in official cow testing;
three are superintendents of public
instructions interested in dairying;
two are managing cooperative cream
eries; one is a milk inspector in a
metropolitan bureau of health; two
are butter makers in creameries; and
two are taking advanced college work.
1 hese are all graduates of the 1915
class.
I he highest salary received by any
of these men is that of the manager
of a large dairy farm who receives
$1200 and quarters. Three others re
ceive $1200 without accessories. Two
receive $1000 each, while several re
ceive $720 with board and lodging ap
proximately equal to this amount.
By following the career of these
students and noting the degree of
success attained by them in their
special lines, the College dairy of
ficers expect to be able to relate more
intimately than ever before the work
of instruction and training to that of
practical fields of endeavor.

erick Eggleston. 30 years old, wife of
a rancher living near here, was burn
ed to death in a fire which destroyed
their home early today. Eggleston
awoke to find the house on fire and
hurried his wife and three small chil
dren outside. He then re-entered the
house to save some furniture. While
thus engaged, his wife also sought to
save some valuables. Her charred
body later way found in the ruins
