Hawley Visits Tillamook
Representative W. C Hawley paid
Tillamook a visit on Tuesday, com
ing in on the delayed train at mid
night, which interfered with the
arrangements which had
been
made for a meeting of the different
Ports and a public meeting. Ow
ing to being called away Represent
ative Humphreys was unable to
come in.
Wednesday morning
Representative Hawley, with the
members of the Port of Tillamook,
and a delegation of business men,
went down to the bay in the Frolic,
visiting Bayocean and Bay City,
where the party was entertained at
luncheon by the people cf that city.
•Ir. Hawley explained to the mem
bers of the Ports of Tillamook and
Bay City the statue of the Tillamook
project to improve the bar, and the
difficulties which confronted them,
owing to the engineers at Washing-
ton, not only changing the plans
which were desired by the local
bodies and recommended by the
Board of Engineers which was sent
here to submit a project, but also
as to the matter of the I’orts con
tributing 50 per cent of the cost.
He knew of no way whereby the
project now lecoiniiie :ded by the

To attempt
.
to do so
would, no doubt, jeopardise the
whole project and it won Id be years,
probably, before another could be
substituted, as the whole thing, such
as another survey would have to-
be made. He hardly thought it
right or just to the local people and
the local eng ineer for the engineers
at Washington to plan out and ex
act conditions in a project not liav
ing their approval, or what they de
sired, but they were tip against a
condition of »Hairs which was hard
to overcome, as no appropriations
would be made winch did not have
the engineers at Washington ap
proval of. He thought it might be a
good plan if some one from Tilla
mook, who was conversant with the
local situation and able intelligently
to discuss, it was sent to Washing
ton to appear before the Rivers and
Harbors Committee, as it would have
considerable weight. He promised
to do everything he possibly could
to procure an appropriation of $400,-

reys, he thought if there w4is a
