TWO MOTIVES ARE SEEN.
Need of Terminal Facilities
and Route into Timbered
Tillamook District the
Object of the Sale.
Two motives, it is understood,
actuated Hill in the acquirement of
the road. One was the need of more
North Hank terminal facilities and
the other availability of the route
for extension to the heavily timber
ed Tillamook district. The latter, it
is believed, was the more important
consideration of the two, as the
United Railways terminal holdings
are meager.
Area Has Big Timber.
The extreme northwestern corner
of Oregon is most heavily timbered
portion of the state not now reached
by railroads. While the Harriman
lines, through the medium of the
Pacific Railway A Navigation Com
pany,
are building the Tilla
mook line into this district, the tim
ber stand, it is said, is sufficient to
furnish traffic for two roads.
The
route projected for the United Rail
ways also will serve rich dairying
countries and open new suburban
territory.
Energetic progress in
extensions of the road within the
near future is to be expected.
At present tne United Railways
line gives an hourly interurban
service to territory already served
by the Astoria & Columbia River
Railroad, the United Railway paral
leling it about 13 miles. Extension
work is in progress, but has been
hampered greatly this Winter by
bad weather. The road is now head
ing toward Forest Grove.
The sale of the road by those who
then owned it was confirmed late in
September, 1900, and the ostensible
purchasers were Iowa and British
Columbia capitalists. A close con
nection between these purchasers
and the Hill roads was traced later
and the report that Mr. Hill had
purchased the road was first pub
lished in October.
Oregon Electric Considered.
Advices from authentic Eastern
sources are that up to within the last
day or two the sale of the Oregon
Electric Railway had not been made
to Hill, although negotiations have
been opened within the last week or
two.
But what may be an indication
that they have finally been com
pleted came yesterday in the form
of an official announcement from
the North Bank offices that trans-
continental passenger and freight
rates via the Northern Pacific,
Great Northern and North bank
routes to Oregon Electric territory
had been ordered, and a divsision
agreed upon.
These rates will be published as
soon as the tariff sheets can be pre
pared by the Transcontinental Tra
ffic Bureau in Chicago, and it will
be four to six weeks before they cast
be actually put in effect.
The rate agreement among the
roads provides for the absorption
of transfer chargee for persons and
baggage across town from the rail
road terminals to the Oregon Elec
tric station at Front and Jefferson.
The rates in all instances on both
passenger and freight business will
meet those of the Southern Pacific
at Willamette Valley points touched
by the Oregon Electric.
Crosstown Transfer Planned.
If the sale of the Oregon Electric
to the Hill interests goes through,
howevet, it is probable that the
transfer across the city will lie elim
inated by the use of the United
Railways line, now owned by Hill,
to reash the Northern Pacific term
inals. The franchise of the Oregon
Electric now permits it to use the
United Railways line only at night
for either passengers or freight.
Ia the event that no other arrange
ments are made, the transfer of
freight cars will take place in the
night hours.
Within a few weeks the reprsen- j
tatives of the Northern roads will,
therefore, be actively soliciting thr
ough buisness in the Willamette
Valley.and with this valuable addi
tion to its traffic resources it is now
expected that the Oregon Electric
will branch out extensively into
other towns in the valley, no matter
in what ownership the roed remains.
Negotiations for through rates
have been in progress off and <tn
among the roods interested about a
year, but heretofore a division of
rates could not be agreed upon.—
