(From the Telegram.)
Before |extensive timber or lum
ber operations are opened down on
the Tillamook side of the Coast range
divide, Tillamook harbor must
be improved so as to admit regular
■ailing» of at least the Coast steam
fleet. Thia announcement is com
mon to the heavy timber interet»
of the Tillamook basin, Logging
back over the mountain divide is
regarded as out of the question,
when price» are anywhere near their
present positions. Putting com
mon lumber on car» for Eastern
shipment is equally absurd, for
only the higher grades will stand
the railway haul. Thia combina
tion of facts causes the timber own-
e a to »ay that they must have water
transportation before opening their
holdings.
A Ivent of the Lytle railway in
Tillamook will give the country
tremendous impetus. Farm pro
ducts will come out in large quan
tities, orchards will be opened, and
the big dairy industry possible
there will spring to the front rank
when given the regular service
made possible with a railway. All
of the higher grades of lumber will
be shipped out also. The railway
will open traffic, and triflic will
bring the people. Tillamook is ex
pected to forge ahead at liglithing
Oregon pace in the next few years.
But the lumber industry, say tim
bermen, will not attain its zenith
there until the bar ia made passable.
Thia fine dairy ranch
of 290 acres, 24 miles
from Portland, up the
Columbia River, right
on the railroad with
several trains and four
boats daily to Portland,
is near a live town with
good schools, churches
and store.
Tile place lay* just
rigiit for a mouey-
maker. ISO i ucres are
under a high state of
cultivation; the balance
is open pasture. There
is a tine meadow of 30
acres in alfalfa, which
produces three crops a
year and tnukes from 4
to fl tons per acre, be
sides a good fall pas
ture.
180 acres of excellent
bottom land which fur
nishes pasture all the
year round. This land
is a sandy loam and is
seeded to grass, making
an abundance of early
and late pasture. 120
acres is second bottom
which is a sandy loam,
similar to the above,
only a little higher.
This is seeded to white
clover,
which grows
prolifically; similar to
the Tillamook County
bottom lands, and will
grow alfalfa, timothy,
grain, vegetable» and
fruit.
A 7 acre orchard of
many varieties pro-
dycess pleutifully for
family and commercial
purposes. W) acres of
the upland (nothills) is
fine grass und fruit
land.
The stock is in A-l
condition, consisting of:
Bar in Bad Shape.
At present the bar is in very poor
condition. Resilient» of Tillamook
country have been urging the Con
gressional delegation to do some
thing to improve it. It is argued
that a limited appropriation will
suffice to make the harbor quite
safe. When opened in this uian-
tier, Tillamook interests have been
assured of regular steamship con
nection by Mr. Schwerin and other
managers. Such connection would
open the California market to Tills
mook for the immeasurable quanti
ties of rough lumber which will be
turned out when the 27,000,(XX),IMX)
to,30,000,000,000 feet of »landing
timber is manufactured. With Cal
ifornia taking the rough, all of the
higher grades would Ire shipped to
the East, on the same principle as
the other Coast districts now oper
ate.
Recognizing that this develop
ment is a due counterpart for rail
way improvement, a strenuous ef
fort is to be made from this time on
for harbor work at Tillamook. One
concern's management has suid
that they would open on a big scale
within IN months after proper water
transportation was given the dis
trict, but would do nothing earlier.
Several others are understood to
occupy the same position. They
believe the time has arrived when
extensive manufacturing there is
warranted, if water facilities can be
had. Given a good bar crossing,
these Tillamook men promise to
sturt within two years afterward a
mighty lumber industry in thut ba
sin, such us Willapa and Grays
Harbor have. Believing that water
connection would be of us great
value us a railway, and that the
two lire essential in developing
Tillamook, plana are lieing fiirmu
lated for pressing the cause of har-
Isir improvement, and the campaign
is not to lie ubated until success is
attained.

Thc'Lytle railway crosses the Co
ast range at an elevation of ulaiut
INtll feet. All of the great Tillamook
forest lies on the west side of this
divide. Logging for the distance
involved und over such a lift as this,
is regarded improbable until prices
have soared far beyond present lev
els. Hauling common lumbvr out
of the basin, to conqtete with that

mill*, is also held to be an un
promising traffic for the present
But the highet grades, which are
sent fur lung distance by railway*,
will not be uflected by such s trit-
| ling haul as that from Tillamook
to the common starting point of
Portland. It is tiecause of these
conditions that the Tillamook men
lielieve the heavy railway interests
1 will now lie linked with them in a
determided effort to have harbor
improvements made, so as to give
all traffic a great impetus.
