Ths Nature Student's Story.
“Tn ray boyhood 1 ouce captured •
nest of three young thrushes. 1 put
them la a gilt cage by uu opeu win
dow, and tlieir mother cauie uud fed
them regularly with norma and grass
hoppers.”
The S)>euker. a nature student, sigh
ed.
"The mother.” be resumed, "must
have expected her little oues to be
soon liberated. She fed them, as I
said, regularly for three days on flesh
food. Theu one evening at sunset she
upi>eared with a sprig of green In her
mouth. 'She thrust the green In
through the gilt bars. Then, singing
a sweet, sad song, she flew away.
And she never came back. Her off
spring the next morning lay dead, side
by side, on the bottom of the cage.
The sprig she had brought them,
which was nearly consumed, was a
sprig of the deadly larkspur. •Eree-
dom or death!
Death or freedom!'
That Is what must have been the bur
den of her farewell song."
The narrator paused, and from his
listeners a low murmur arose, a mur
mur perhaps of sympathy, perhaps of
angry disbelief.

clerk promptly told one of the gnrcons
to get the liook out of bls room, and
while the book was being brought the
clerk said. "De grammar is phonetic.”
When the book was brought. Io and

EYE AND TEETH.
The Dazaling Searchlight.
On a dark uigbt uo warship would
be safe from torpedo attack but for
the xearcbllgbt. The full moon lights
up a torpedo boat so that It cun be
fired at when uearly a mile away. To
produce tbe same Illumination with
tbe most powerful artificial light an
electric arc of 100.000 candle power
placed three-quarters of a mile high
would be needed If the aid of mirrors
were not available.
But with this
light and an lngenloua arrangement »
of mirrors it Is possible to surpass
the moon. Searchlights are uow made
which throw light a distance of slxt.v-
three miles, but objects can be seen
only a few miles from tbe source of
the light. Tbe effect on tbe enemy Is i
most demoralising. When the bright
beam Is suddenly thrown on tbe eye
tbe pupil dbntracts violently: when the
beam is removed tbe eye can see noth
ing. If this be repeated a few times
it takes all Ibe nerve out of a man. so
i
that only tbe best trained and moat
courageous can continue tbe attack.—
