Every fair minded person must
now admit that the hurried arrest of
the editor is simply a case of perse
cution. As a matter of business the
editor printed a circular for other
parties which set forth nothing but
the truth. He had nothing what
ever to do with the law and order
meeting which prompted the issu
ing of the circular, nor did he write
or circulate the same. Yet he is ar
rested while those who were at the
back of the law and order movement
are not molested. This is another
instance of so-called “justice” in
Tillamook. Another thing, the fact
that tlie^parties were in such a hur
ry to ha ve the editor arrested during
the temporary absence of Mr. Cooper
and touserpthe office of the deputy
district attorney and to add addi
tional coat to the taxpayers, is proof
enough that the whole thing was
concocted to persecute the editor at
the taxpayers expense.
Attorney
Talmage is the man who appears
to have been the moving spirit in
the affair, but does anyone know of
Mr. Talmage busying himself in the
prosecution of hie law partner who
helped run out of the city a State’s
witness, in the disgraceful affair in
the post office, in the savage fight
on the street with the city marshal,
or in the inHult to the judge in the
circuit court ? Oh, no. The editor
takes no pleasure in refering to
these unpleasant incidents for they
were a thing of the past, but as he
is assailed and made the scape goat
for others, no one will blame us for
having a little righteous indigna
tion and striking back at those who
singled out and commenced the
fight on the editor. That’s fair play,
isn’t it ?
If the “muzzle” law is constitu
tional then the biggest scoundrel
and grafter could run for office and
the Press would be “muzzled” as
far as informing the public. That
is just the kind oflawthat suits that
class of men. Great is Oregon- -for
fool laws.

The Eugene city council passed
an ordinance declaring a common
nuisance any place where near-beer
or any other beverage containing
insufficient alcohol to cause intoxi
cation is sold or kept for sale. It is
plainly seen that towns with any
civicpride and business enterprise
have had enough of near-beer joints,
for they have been, as in this city,
made blind pig joints.
