are endeavoring to secure ¡ther
vessel to take the place of th; raft
lost off Tillamook bar last day.
It is the intention of the c<?any
to charter a vessel until a ncraft
can be built. Negotiationhave
been in progress for the chtring
of a steamer, but upto a lahour
last evening nothing defir had
been settled on.
Rumor had it yesterday it ne-
gotiations were completed r the
placing of the steam sooner

For a time she plied in thregular
service as a lumber packcbetween
Portland and San Francis. Later
she jumped into notoriety reason
of the slaying of the fchman,
on a wild night in Februf of this
year by a person suppod to be
one Thorin. The Washgton is
now moored below the GJernment
moorings at Claremont.
L. T. Branstetter, present of the
Tillamook Transportam Com
pany, returned Sunday Com Cali
fornia. He attended a leeting of
the stockholders yesteihy and it
was decided not to aindon the
run. The new vessel foe built for
the rnn will be about tesarne size
as the Argo, but will e built on
modern lines and withlll modern
equipment She will e provided
with passenger aceamodations
for at least 40 people.-Oregonian.

W. H. RICHARDSON DIED AT
BIGGS.

ren Hale Richardso; who died
yesterday morning, atr a protract
ed illness, at the agcof 71 years,
was a veteran of the Cvil War and
a member of Compares E and C
of the Third Regimat, California
Volunteer Infantry, aving enlist
ed at Stockton, in lay 1862. He
was mustered out f the United
States military serice at Camp
Douglas, Ariz., in My, 1865.
Mr. Richardson w« a native of
Corinth, Vt., and t resident of
California for a mtiber of years,
returning to Vermcnt in 1873, but
again returning tc California in
1881, and located al Biggs in 1900.
He was a resident tore for the past
nine years, making!host of friends
who extend their synpathy to his
widow and brother John Burton
Richardson, who sirvive him and
who were with him at his passing
away.
The funeral was leld to-day from
his late residence, the Rev. W. C.
Oarriott, pastor of tie M. E. Church,
officiating. The fdlowing veterans
of the Civil War, Frank F. Carn-
duff, Moses Lo Pbint and M. A.
Randall, with J. M, Brough; C. E.
Chatfield and N. B La Point, friends
of the family, were pall bearers.
Interment was made in Live Oak
Cemetery.

On account of bad weather Miss
Bessie Bays has closed her school
and returned home.
Those who attended the “Hard
time” box social at Wolf Creek re
port a ■ ery pleasant time. Master
Rober. Coulson was the lucky cava
lier who purchased the basket
drawing the prize turkey.
Telephone lines became badly
mixed last week during the storm,
causing some confusion and annoy-
ance but more fun than anything
else.
Henry Smith was taken quite ill
last week and as he grew worse Dr,
Smith was called Sunday and pro
nounced the trouble to be inflama-
tion of the stomach and bowels.
At this writing the patient is rest
ing easy and appears to be on the
road to recovery.
Mrs. Nancy Smith is enjoying a
visit from her brother who came in
a few days ago.
Mr. Bays reports the welcome
newt, that his daughter Mrs. H. D.
McIntyre, is recovering from a
serious spell of typhoid fever, which
came near proving fatal.
The extremely high water last
week did some damage to bridges
in this locality. The new bridge
at W. D. Gladwells came very near
going out.
W. N. Bays went to the city Fri
day and returned Saturday.
Mrs. P. R. Coulson, of Blaine,
visited Mrs. Jno. Borba, a few days
last week.
A number of turkeys owe their
lives to the fact that the high water
and storms last week, prevented
their owners from taking them to
market in time for Thanksgiving.
It is twelve years this winter since
we began gathering news items for
the Headlight. Of course in that
length of time a correspondent is
bound to strike a good many snags.
Whenever our attention is called to
a misstatement we always are glad
to correct it But have been mis
informed a number of times, and
of course the blame all falls on the
correspondent. Experience, how
ever, is a good school though a
dear one, and we have made a reso
lution, although it is not New Years.
In the future, if anybody wishes
anything doubtful printed,they can
send their items to the paper them-
celves, for we positively decline to
be made a catspaw to rake anyone's
chestnuts out of the fire again.
Mrs. Ebbesen is feeding the hay
out of the old barn on the land she
bought near Hazel Bend cheese
factory. The storm almost blew it
down and the hay will soon be ruin
ed if left exposed to the rain.
R. Y. Blalock was in our neigh
borhood Thursday enumerating the
children.
Manuel has a little deer,
(Not “dear” please understand),

’Twill teed right from his hand.
It followed him to school one day,
I think ’twas against the rule.
I’m sure the teacher .must have
smiled,
To see a deer in school !
The many friends of Alley Foland
were very sorry to hear of his great
misfortune.
