TIDES OF PUGET SOUND.
Th« Swift and Turbulant Waters cf
th« Narrows.
The waters nt the narrows are
treacherous. It Is o place of terrible
tides.
Viewed from tbe precipitous
shores, the surging waters sre mag
nificent. The scene bss been compared
with the Hudson above New York
city.
The waters of that part of

bay. a vast Inland sea within Itself,
all flow fn and out of the narrows.
In tbe upper reaches of the sound
some twenty-five or thirty miles from
the narrows the tides strain s height
of more than twenty feet. When the
tides begin to fall all the accumulated
water rushes out through the narrows
like a great river st flood.
In like
manner when tbe tide sets tn tbe di
rection of Olympia tbe narrows be
come a swift and turbulent stream.
Frightful whirlpools ar« numerous.
Streams running powerfully In con
trary directions strike and tbe water
bolls.
Large steamboats struck by tbe con
trary currents groan and creak and
sway under the strain. This being so.
It Is no wonder tbat small craft often
