The Man and His Methods, as Seen by Rev. H G.
Bond, D. D., Litt. D., Girard, Kansas.
Probably never in the history of any state have so many
great revivals been conducted by one evangelist as have been con
ducted by Rev. French E. Oliver, D. D., in the state of Kansas.
His work in the state began almost eight years ago in Cotton
wood Falls, and although scores of meetings have been held in
Kansas since that time by Dr. Oliver, as well as in other states,
all liave been crowned with absolute success. While other evan
gelists have had great denominations back of their meetings, using
all their official machinery to secure dates for their workers,
Evangelist Oliver has conducted strctly non-sectarian union
meetings without any alliance with any combination of denomi-
nationalism or other evangelists.
1 have known Dr. Oliver for about seven years, and have
been in close and personal touch with him a considerable part of
the time, and can therefore describe him and his work as a preach
er, Evangelist and lecturer from an insight into his character,
gained from years of personal acquaintance. Having been pas
tor at different points where he has conducted great union revival
campaigns with pheuomindl results, 1 have had opportunity of
anylizing the man and his mothods.
Probably no meeting and no evangelist since the days of the
apostles was ever opposed more strenuously or persistently by
unbelief, indifference and the devil himself, than the work and
the worker—Dr. Oliver—in Girard, Kansas. Yet, notwithstand
ing the tremendous odds against him; the organized opposition
which he was obliged to meet aud overcome in order that victory
might be suatched from the ; jaws of defeat the foul weapons
usedin personal attacks against him—Dr. Oliver was at all times
master of the situation, and was enabled to lead the people of
God to phenomenal success—the meeting resultingin 500 con
versions.
Dr. Oliver is a man of most striking personality—towering!
like a giant, head and sh rnldeis, above the average m in, stauditig
six feet four inches in height, with broad shoulders, as straight
as an Indian; his body well knit and full of muscles, nerves and
virility, a classical face, firm jaws, lips that close like a vice, a
a chiti that denotes strength of will aud firmness of character ; a
head that would answer for a Grecian model and eyes that are
steel gray—the truest of all colors, so the sages say—piercing and
searching the souls of his listeners through and through. Dr.
Oliver’s greater strength lies in the quality of his miud and soul—
God has been very generous to him in giving him a superb men- i
tai power house, and the mental machinery has so well p'lt
together and is controlled with such consumate skill that he

Having been an extensive traveler both in this country and
Europe, Dr. Oliver is neverat a loss for just the right
with which to clinch the truth he is trying to lodge in the hearts
of his hearers ; his sermonic and lecture material is well chosen,
as he has ranged the wide world over digging up things new and
old, bringing comparison and figure of speech to bear upon the
point in hand with the skill of the master rhetorician aud the
power of the trained logician.— Topeka Capitol.

The London Tunes is correct in saying
that the influx <»f Americans into Cana
da IS surprisingly large. It is probably
correct, too, in predicting that ihe
movement will continue lor
several
years longer. About 70,000 Americans
are expected to cross the line in the
calendar year 1909, moving Into the
Northwestern provinces chiefly They
aregoing thcte.lrecauae they can buy land
for a fifth, or evens tenth, of the amount
«liich they receive for their Inrms,
per acre, in the United Slates But the
Canadian and British statistics emit to
tell how many disgusted Americans re
tin n to the ir ow n country after an ex
perience of a year or two in Canada.
That the number is considerable is,
shown from reports of arrivals here and
there, from time to time These Anieri
can emigrants forget that the land which
they buy is no richer than that which
they left in this country, while in most
esses it is much farther from the market
The returns which Canadian farms yield,

States. The climate ol Canada is less
hospitable. The society, the laws and
the customs are alien. All th<«e things
