MILLS,
pTO THE EDITOR TILLAMOOK HEADLIGHT ]
Dear Sir, —Might I ask a small space
in > our paper to express a few views in
regard to the road question for I do not
think that any one lean appreciate the
blessings of good roads more than those
who like myself have lived where our
only road was a pack trail.
In regard to sending out side for a
civil engineer I certainly cannot *ee the
wisdom of so doing, while we have such
men in here as Mr. John Hickey, a man
who is a natural engineer and whose
work is the only recommendation he
needs, as any one will acknow ledge it
they were acquainted with his district
before he took hold of it, and seejit as it
is at the present time. He also knows
every foot of ground in Tillamook and
consequently the difference in the soils,
in my opinion where he to have full
supervision of our roads there would be
no kick coming. Ofcotnse there may
l>e others in Tillamook just as good but
we know whAt he is by the work he has
done heretofore.
I agree with Mr. Watson in regard to
seeing that no water holes be allowed
io exist during the winter, I believe it
would pay big to have the gravel
hauled in the summer to where it can be
reached in the wet season and whenever
a break or depression occurs in the road
bed attend to it immediately. In my
opinion we will have to grayel a good
deal heavier than heretofore so as to
meet the increased traffic during the wet
season, that is bound to come from this
on, the time has passed when we have
to stop hauling in the winter for fear < f
spoiling the roads. Well I guess that is
about all, I'm like the Irishman and the
l>eHr, I don’t trouble very often, and] it
may be a long time before I do so again,
so maybe you will find space for this.
Yours Truly.
J ack J innings .
Kilchis, April 10, 1909.
[With nil due respect to the opinion of
our correspondent, we want to say this
that John Hickey has not the technical
education in modern roads building, con
sequently lie could not fill the position
of road engineer.
We think that Mr.
Hickey will admit that. With the large
amount of road money spent in John
Hickey's district the last ten years we
have ati idea there ought to be some
good roads in that vicinity. Yet. like
most every road district in the county,
roads have been located and re located
in that district also.—E d .]
