DAGOS CAUSE TROUBLE.
Arm Themselves and Force
Everybody on the Rail
road to Quit Work.
Considerable excitement and fear was
caused on Wednesday by the Dagos who
are working on the Pacific Railway and
Navigation Company's railroad between
the \Vils >n river nnd the Miami. For
several weeks the Dagos have been quit-
ing work on account of the wages the
contractors were paying. Wednesday
thev demanded that their wages l>c rais
ed from $1.85 to $2 a day, which was
granted, and not being satisfied they
demanded $2 25 a day, which was re
refused. They struck work, organized
and armed themselves with fire arms,
and coming down the truck forced all
crews to quite work, even the surveyors
who were working near the Wilson
river, stopping work on the entire line
forthedav. It was fortunate that the
different crews quit work ns they did,
otherwise there might have been serious
trouble, for the Dagos were in a threat
ening, uglv mood, and quite a number
living armed, this caused some fear. Av
an instance of this, when a gang of 160
came down the truck to the Wilson river
they found Ed Lindsey and Walter Oli
ver surveying,when the leader, brandish
ing a big gun, told them to quit work
There were about sixty men on the
dump and in the woods around them
several armed men were concealed.and it
suddenly occurred to Lindsey thnt he
had some surveying to do in the neigh
borhood of the new saw mill. As soon
ns they quit work the armed Dagos
came out of the brush.
It was only
part of the Dagos v> bo wanted to strike,
but the othets were forced to do soon
account of threats. Sheriff Crenshaw
was called to the scene of the trouble,
and with the assistance of eleven deputies
he went through the camp and arrested
four of the leaders, bringing them to the
city Wednesday night and locking them
up in the county jail.
This took the
Dagos by surprise, only one appearing
ugly. As there is another of the leaders
that the sheriff failed to arrest last night
he left again thia morning for Bay City,
where he ha» eleven deputies to meet
any trouble which might arise today, as
the contractors are paying the men off
