Mr Thomsen does not anticipate op

franchise contained the pro\ iso that it
must be completed to Hillsboro before it
could be op rated within the citj Inuits.
Il is believe«! that the road lu Holbrook

utilizing the filled in lots tor building
purposes. It is said that hundreds of
new lots will be built from the bay by
this means Much of the property has
already been disposed of at a high figure
and the demand looks ns though it
might exceed the supply. In the early
Spring a building boom is expected.
Though two steamers are in regular
service between Portland and Tillamook
it is claimed that it will lie impossible
for them to handle the crowds which
will Hock there the coming season.
\\ hen a railroad from Portland taps
that territory the prediction is made
ihat it will forge ahead at an astonish
ing rate. At the same time the men in
charge of the navigation companies are
of the opinion that traffic by the watel
route will be trebled
Such a result is
anticipated from the fact that the rail
road will cause greater development and
create much new business which can be
handled to better advantage bv the
steamer lines. Besides, it is pointed out
that many people will avail themselves
of the opportunity to take the short s* a
trip.
So far the only freight coming out of
Tillamook consists of farm produce such
as butter, eggs ami cheese. The Elmore
brought ab mt 25 tons this trip for dis
tribution entirely among local merch
ants. With a little <flbrt it is said that
an extensive market in Eastern Oregon
and Washington could be built up for
the produce. When that has been done
it is contended that the traffic would
reach such proportions ns to make it
necessary for other steamers to be plac
ed on the route. On the down trips the
craft take out all the freight they can
