Anna knew that this trip was just
■chat her mother needed, for she had
been working at the post-office steadilr
all winter. So when shn left school that
morning she was very much discouraged,
and prepared herself for a great strain.
*‘I dou't kuow how I ever got along
when you were sick, mother, dear. ” said
Anna. •• It seemed that I bad to be on
wings ; hut just think, mother, when I
went back to school I was ahead ->f all
my class. Tin glad I studied hard for I
have higher grades than any other
student, altho I had to be a night owl
to do it.'' Her mother laughed. “ Oh.
Anna, if you could only get the highest
in the class at the end of the term I be
lieve I would be the happiest woman in
the town.*' Anna srnil«!. but in that
smile was a determination and she said
to herself, •• I will do it.’’ Anna kept
her word, for when the Profeasor an-
nunced the valeditorian to the class it
was no other than Anna Day.
When Anna told her mother she was
certainly the happiest woman in the
village and she made Anna happy by
telling her she should have a pretty
gown as her fingers io Id make Anna
was not disappointed when she sa w the
dainty white garment with the fancy
wmk on it and she felt that it had paid
her to be a night owl.

tent and in its purposes.
Fortunately the question of waterway
improvement is now considered from
the standpoint of its immeasurable and
its national importance.
With the
question made a part of the fixed and
settled policy of the government; with
annual appropriations made in adequate
amounts ; with the merit of the stream
and the favorable re(x>rt of the Board of
Engineers, U.S.A., determining tl.e
work and with the work continuous,
waterway improvement will become an
accomplished fact—which it never
would become under the old time plan
of sposmadic appropriations, inadequate
in amount and with the work of im
provement dragging and delayed. It is
unnecessary to dilate upon the advan
tages of waterway improvement. Pro
ducer, shipper and receiver, confronted
with freight congestions and with ad*
mitted inability on the part of present
means of transportation to handle the
freight offered as it should be handled,
know the inestimable advantages that
would come to all classes and conditions
of trade, commerce and agriculture from
the improvement of waterways—ano
the great number of delegates to the
National Rivers and Harbors Congress
is incomestible evidence of the know
ledge. It wjll undoubtedly be the most
important meeting of the series, with all
sections of the country alike interested
and aiding in the work of the Congress
through which alone, waterways im
provement can be brought about.
Cough Medicine for
Cnlldren.
The kcason for coughs and cold»; is
now at hand and too much care cannot
be used to pr^t«:t the children. A child
is much more likely to oontract diph
theria or scarlet fever when he has a
cold. The quicker you cure his cold the
less the risk. Chamberlain's Cough
Remedy is the sole reliance of many
mothers, and few of those who have tried
it are willing to nee any other. Mrs. F.
F. Starcher, of Ripley,, W. Va.. says.
“I have never used anything other than
Chamberlain's Cough Remedy for my
children and i£ has always given good
satisfaction.” This remedy contains no
opium or other narcotic and may be
given as confidently to a child as to an
adult. Fur sale by all druggists.
