Whin Woman Admirid Whisker*.
For ages beards were the delight of
ancient beauties. Tbe sight of a shaved
chin excited sentiments of borror aud
aversion. To obey the Injunctions of
his bishops Louis VII. of France crop
ped his hair a la pompadour and shaved
off bls luxuriant whiskers. Eleanor
Aqultane. his consort, found him with
this uncommon appearance very ridic
ulous and very contemplate. She re
venged herself by becoming something
more than a coquette. The king ob
tained a divorce. Sbe then married
the Count of Anjou, who shortly aft
erward ascended tbe English throne,
and gave him as her marriage dower
the rich provinces of Poitou and Gul-

What Killed th* Adjutant?
A good story from the regimental
Journal of the “Fighting Fifth" con
cerns Colonel (then Captain) FitzRoy
and dates back to 1860. FitzRoy was
possessed of an air gun. and one after
noon be took a shot at an adjutant, a
bird which, being an excellent scaven
ger. Is protected from Injury by a fine
of 100 rupees. Several people saw the
bird fall, but heard no report There
was, of course, a hubbub, and a court
of Inquiry was ordered to Investigate
the bird's death.
As luck would have it, FitzRoy was
appointed president of the court, the
finding of which was duly recorded as
follows: "The court, having carefully
investigated all the evidence brought
before It have come to the conclusion
that the bird died of sunstroke."—

A wonderful discovery has been made
by George W. Frye, of Lexington, Ohio,
by which a solid substance having the
qualities of rubber can lie pr-aliiced from
skiin milk. While passing electric cur
rents through milk to sterlize it Mr.
Frye found a soft, white, elastic sub
stance, probably the casein, which has
resulted in a product that he calls
ouisite. Sixteen pounds of omsite can
be produced from 100 pounds of Rkim
milk, the latter having a market value
of 8 cents for 100 pounds. Omsite is
said to be impervious to ‘acids, un
affected by heat or cold, an absolute
nonconductor of electricity, fireproof
and practically indestructible,—Field

Why Colds are Dangerous.
Because you have contracted ordinary
colds and recovered from them without
treatment of any kind, do not for a
moment imagine that cold« are not
dangerous
Everyone
knows
that
pneumonia and chronic catarrh have i
their origin in a common cold, Con-
sumption is not cauaed by a c«»ld hut
the cold prepares the system for J.e re
ception and development of the germs
that would not otherwise have found
lodgment. It is the same with all in.
factious diseases
Diphtheria, scarlet
fever, measles and whooping cough are
much more likely to be contracted when
the child has a cold
You will s«*e from
this that more real danger larks in s
cold than in any other of the common
ailments. The eaaieat and Quickest way
to cures cold is to take Chamberlain’««
