On Monday evening Sept. 21st, Justice
Chas. P. Nelson performed the ceremony
which made .Mr. George E. Leach and
Miss Laura I. Utter two of Cloverdale's
popular young people, man and wife,
at tbe Bain residence which had been
prepaled for their abode.
Tbe friends of the happy Couple had
arranged the rooms in beautiful flower
decorations and the ceremony, although
short, in form, was grand and ini

located in Cloverdale, which he has
made his headquarters while in employ
of* the U.S. government aa Forest
Guard, and by his steady and unassum

their hearty congratulations.
Miss Utter was formerly of Michigan,
where her relatives live. She has been

Both are intelligent and Industrious
and their future cannot be otherwise
than successful.
In the evening Mr and Mrs. Leach
gave a pleasant reception to a houseful
of friends and a little finer they were
also given a friendly charivari by all

The natives on some of the Pacific
Islands, being provided with neither
metals nor any stone harder than the
coral rocks of which the atolls they
Inhabit are composed, would seem bad
ly off, indeed, for material of which
to make tools or weapons were It not
that their very necessity has bred an
Invention no less ingenious than curi
ous and effective. This Is nothing less
than the use of sharks' teeth to give a
cutting edge to their wooden knives
and swords. The mouth of the shark
contains 300 teeth arranged In five
rows, all closely lying upon each other,
except tbe outer row. and so construct
ed that as one tooth is broken or lost
another takes Its place. The teeth
are uot only pointed and keen edged,
but are finely and regularly serrated.
so that the cutting power Is greatly in
creased. Indeed, so great a faculty
have these teeth for wounding that the
implements and weapons upon which
they are used have to be handled with
great care. The Klngmill Islanders
make many strange articles of sharks’
teeth.

“All be has to do Is to get a Job like
mine in a bouse occupied mostly by
French families, and he’ll learn some
astonishing lessons in tbe art of sav-
lug. Up to two months ago I was
working in a building of that kind.
So far as attending to the garbage
was concerned, I had tbe easiest time
of my life. There was practically no
garbage. # Tbe people lived
well
enough. 1 guess. Anyhow they re
ceived packages from tbe butcher and
grocer, but they never seemed to
throw anything away. About the only
thing they didn't eat was coffee
grounds and potato skins and tomato
cans, and there was precious little
waste of even that.
"Where I am working now the fami
lies are all American. That is where
the food goes to waste. Tbe people in
that house throw away enough pro
visions every day to feed all those
French families a week.”—San Fran-

Gulls and Clams.
Eggs Barred.
Tbe discussion continues between
those who think that all the acts of
the lower animals are satisfactorily
explained by the hypothesis of inher

there Is an element of intelligence. If
not of reasoning, tn these things. W.
L. Finley, in a work on American
birds, mentions an observation of his
which may perhaps be explained either
way, but which in any case is interest

rising to n height of about fifteen feet,
allowed it to fall upon hard ground.
The clam kept Its mouth shut. Again
the gull rose with It to the same height
and dropped It once more, with tbe
same result. This operation was re
peated fifteen times, when at last the
shock had tbe desired effect, tbe shell
was opened, and the gull enjoyed Its
dainty contents.
