Astoria capitalists have put up mon­
ey to pay fur surveys tor the electric line
projected by the Astoria people, the As­
toria. Seaside & Tillamook ElectricCom
pany. Residents of the country to be
traversed by thelinehavcdonated rights-
of-way for almost the entire distance.
During the past week surveyor, have
been put in the field and are seeking the
best route for the new line. The propo.
sition is in the hands of a promoter to
finance and it is said the new road has
the brightest prospects for becoming a
real railroad.
Construction is easy as far south as
Seaside, it is said, and those behind the
project say the line can be built for that
portion of the distance for $20,000 a
mile. South of Seaside the country to
be crossed is mountainous and the
cost of construction is expected to in­
crease. However, this fact will not de­
ter the men behind the project from put
ting it thruugh, it is said.
An attractive part of the proposition
is said to be the fact that the Nehalem
River, which will be crossed by the line,
will be made to furnish electric power.to
operate the railro’ad. It is said that a
reconnoissance made by the surveyors
for the road has disclosed an ideal site
for a power dam and that practically
unlimited power may be developed
along the stream as'it is needed.
A party of 15 surveyors is working
southwest from Astoria to Seaside and
will have the first part of the line map
ped out within the next few days. Then
the somewhat more difficult country
north ot Tillamoos Bay will be entered.
Astoria people are thoroughly in earn-
est-oycr the project and a few men (in
the city subscribed $10,000 in a few
hour, recently to pay for the first sur.
veys. They are resolved to open up a
portion of the coast country that has
been long neglected, and they do not
propose to wait longer for either the
Hill or Harriman interests. Both sys­
tems have projected line, into Tillamook
but neither is doing any work on the
surveys at present.

graveling the first two miles of the
county road lying on the east side of the
north fork of the Nehalem river, from
the beginning of said road near the
gravel pit in section 25, tp. 3 north,
range 10 west, under the following con­
ditions : All gravel must be of a good
quality of river or creek gravel to be
placed on said road as may be directed
by the county court or it, representative.
The work must be comvleted on or be­
fore Oct. 1st, 1908. Bids must be sub.
mitted at so much per cubic vard on the
above work, and to be filed with the
county clerk on or before 9 o'clock a.m.
August 5th, 1908. All work must he
done to the satisfaction of the court and
the right being reserved to reject any
