Another case of suicide occur. 1 on
Wednesday from carbolic acid. J. K.
Craven, a respected citizen of this coun
ty, who lives at Meda, went to his barn
at eleven o'clock on Wednesday morning
and took a dose of carbolic acid and
lived three hours after doing so. Mr.
Craven came tothiscitv several weeks
ago for medical treatment, suffering with
stomach trouble. It is supposed that he
became espo^dent on account of ill
health. The remains were buried on
Thursday.
I. II 8mith committed suicide in this
citv on Saturday morning, who, having
become tired of life and his mode of liv
ing, took poison. Smith was a drinking
man and did carpentering work. Satur
day morning he sold his tools to C. E.
Reynolds, saying that he was going
outside to work. He went to the drug
store and bought a bottle of carbolic
acid, after which he went home, going to
his bedroom. He wrote a short note to
his wife on a tablet.bidding her good bv.
Taking off his clothing, he laid down on
the bed and took a dose of the carbolic
acid, where he was found by his wife.
Smith having been dead some time when
Mrs. Smith had occasion to go to his
room. Coroner Reynolds was called,
and after making an investigation did
not think it necessary to bold an in
quest.

HIS PLAIN DUTY.
It is Now up to Mayor John
son to Show his Sincerity
and Make Good.
Mavor Johnson’i letter to the city
council about the enforcement of law in
certainly a commendable document if the
spirit of the communication is carried
out to the letter. All that we need aav
in regard to it is that it looks to us that
the Mayor has been on the wrong side
of the fence and is now ready to do the
right thing. Rut whv this sudden change
of front for the enforcement of law ? It
is certainly surprising to us. It was
Mayor Johnson and a number of others
who ran out of town a detective who
was sent here by the District Attorney,
and at the taxpayers'expense, to round
up the violators of the law, which was
a most serious offence in itself. Although
we are informed that the Mayor regret,
ted his hasty action when sober judg
ment prevailed, it soon had its demoral
izing effect. The parties who were ar
rested then were selling liquor without a
license and to prove whether the Mayor
is sincere in what he says, it is not too
late for the city attorney to prosecute
these cases. Another case wc wish to
cite. A complaint, was sworn to by J. J.
Rupp against Tom Browne for using as
profane and disgusting language as was
ever heard in this citv. He pleaded
guilty in the justice court with the ex
pectation ot getting off with a small
fine, but the justice surprised him by im
posing a fine of $50, which was paid. It
seems that Browne went to Mayor John,
son and City Attorney Talmage and told
them what he did, the result of which is
a writ of review has been filed in the cir
cuit court for the purpose of getting the
money back. It is not too late for the
mayor and the city attorney to enforce
the city ordinance for using abusive lan
guage against Browne. It is his second
offence, lor he used disgusting language
before to the annoyance of on« of the
churches in the citv on a Sunday morn
ing, and Mayor Botts sworeout the com
plaint, which make a good precedent for
Mayor Johnson to follow. The Mayor
says : “The city attorney, if requested so
to do, will assist the district attorney in
prosecutions in the state court.’’ We.
therefore, make the request that the city
attorney and the mayor assist the state
in the Browne writ of review now land
ing in the circuit court, and as they are
attorneys for the defendant in this case
they will have to do the somersault act
to square themselves.
We simply
mention these few facts to show how dif
ficult it was for the county officials to en
force law and punish offenders when the
city officials work in the opposite direc
tion. But we do not want to keep harp
ing on these matter, but the Press and
the public can only judge public officials
by the record they have made and are
making in being lined up with th«»se who
are opposed to or a re in favor of law and
order. We believe that Mayor Johnson
down it. his heart is wanting to do
what is right for the city, and whatever
indiscretion he may be guilty of in the
past will soon be forgiven and forgotten
if the city officials will prosecute the
cases we have mentioned above, which
will be the best kind of evidence the peo
ple can have that Mayor Johnson is
sincere in bis effort to round up the boot
leggers and others for violating city
ordirances. Mayor Johnson has made
public what he will do, and the Press in
behalf of the people of this city have
cited three clear cases where he can make
good, for the records are prima fade evi
dence that they are guilty by their own
