The following letter was received by
one of our business men. which shows
the action of the Transportation Com
mittee and Mr. Henry Hahn in regard to
their attitute with the new boat, which
explains itself. The letter read.
Now, a word as to your information
concerning the report that the writer
has been instrumental in killing off the
the new steamer proposition between
Portland and Tillamook. In this connec
tion the writers desires to say it is to lie
regarded that this impression has been
planted among vour people, for their can
1« nothing further from lhe truth than
this In the first place, the w riter is
chairman of the Transportation Com
mittee of the Chamlier of Commerce and
he gave these young men. the promoters,
all the information at his command and
gave them a letter of introduction to
the merchants of this citv tn order to
pave the way for them towards obtain
ing financial support among our mer.
chant*, in addition to which t he secretary
,,t the Transportât!, n Committee, Mr.
Van Heekeren, was instructed to ssoist
Mr. Pohle in the pursuit of his enterprise
and he spent at least eight or ten Hat*
in assisting. Just why, then, the Trans
portation Committee, or the chairman
ofit.orthe house of Wadhams & Co.,
ot which he is president, should be at
tacked is past the writer’s u derstanding.
We have teen shown th. article ap
pearing in the Headlight u >der date ol
April 2d aud in reply can >nlv sav that
Mr. Pohle, one of the promoters is en
tirely mistaken in Sts surmise that Mr.
Elmore had an-thing whatever to d-
with hi* inability to obtain funds as
readily as he expected from the Portland
merchants.
As a matter ot fact the Transportation
Committee at all times assists transpor
tation movements of this kind wherever
it can—that is one of its cardinal func
tions. and nothing could be further out
of line than to charge the Trar.spsrta-
tion Committee with any effort on its
part to kill any transportation proposi
tion. Its mission is to promote where-
ever it can but not to obstruct.
Injustice to the Transportation Com
mittee of the Chamber of Commerce and
to Waduams & Company I would kind.
Iv ask you to have the H-adlight make
the correction as before stated.
Yours trulv,
H enry H ahn ,
