Baxter Stillwell has withdrawn as a
candidate for justice of the peace for the
second justice district, leaving the race on
the republican ticket between A. T. White
and G. W. Sappington. Four years ago
Sappington was a candidate in the June
election for the same position as a non-
partisan judiciary candidate in opposi
tion to the regular republican nominee,
when the vote was: G. B. Alley, rep.,

Attempt made in Portland
to Knock the Proposition.
ANVIL IS PURCHASED.
She Will be Brought to Ore
gon after being Fitted
Up and Re-Painted.
As was to be expected, the proposition
to put on a boat in opposition to the
Sue H. Elmore met with considerable
"knocking,” and the greatest surprise
was in a number of Portland busmess
nen getting cold ieet after Mr. Samuel
Elmore had paid a visit to Portland to
see what he could do to head off the pro
position. AU went well with the promo,
ters until Mr. Elmore appeared on the
scene, and for teveral days it looked as
though he was going to be successful in
defeating lhe whole proposition, as the
following letter will clearly show :
Portland. Ore., March 36, 08.
M r . E dmunds , Tillamook Oregon.
Dear Sir : I hate to report to you that
the proposition to put the "Anvil" on
the Portland-Tillamook run is about to
fall through.
Mr. Elmore came to Portland and
personally visited Mr. Han. manager ol
Wadham & Co., who is secretary of tbe
transportation committee.
To get anything out of the wholesale
house, it would be uecessarv to work
through the transportation committee.
Since Mr. Elmore saw Mr. Han we have
been unable to do anything with them.
All manner of ways have been used to
discourage any investor*. Twice we
had the money all promised. The arti
elein Sunday's Journal was correct.
Mr. Wilcox (Portland Flouring Mills)
who owns
500 in the Elmore, gave
out that he was saving his money tor our
special benefit. He has lots of influence
<n this town and that has hurt us.
These combined with tightness of
the money narket have made it an up
hill job for us.
We have $30,000 that we can abso.
lately count upon.
Now would it be
possible to raise some money oyer(there?
You could take stock, bonds, or any
fair way.
Wo can raise some more money here,
but 1 am afraid that we will not be able
to make a go of it without some finan
cial aid from Tillamook.
If you could take $10,000 stocks or
loan us $10,000 on the boat, we can put
it through.
Could you not see Mr. Walton and
Mr. Harrison ? They would do some
thing, I think.
We will give you a mortgage covered
by insurance to protect you in case of a
loan.
I will have Mr, Johnson call you up
Monday morning. Hoping that Tilla*
mook will get the transportation ser
vice that she deserves. I am,
Very sincerly yours.
