Local news this week is very scarce,
with nothing going on of public interest.
Geo. Watt was up from Bay City on
Monday and informed us that 400 sacks
of flour have been at Astoria for him for
over three months, since October 7tb.

Henrv’Crenshaw. as probation officer
of the juvenile court, left here on Wednes
day for the south part of the county to
gather up the Davis children.or as many
of them which have not obtained perma
nent homes, and will take them to the
Boy»’ and Girls’ Home in Portland, the
county judge having made an order to
that effect.
The Evie and the Gerald C. caine in
with freight for Bay City on Monday,
and the Sue K. Elmore came in the same
day with freight for this city, and on
Tuesday it was a busy day, for all the
stores bad been out of feed for two weeks,
which caused a rush for it when some of
the delayed feed did arrive.
The Hose Company on Thursday even
ing re-elected all its officers, viz., Albert
Blank, president ; Henry Crenshaw,
chief; James Walton, treasurer ; Walter
F. Baker, secretary. A committee was
appointed, consisting of A. K. Case, Ed.
Snodgrass and Allen Page, to arrange
tor the annual ball on February 22nd.
The Tillamook Water Commission on
Monday elected its officers as follows :
C. E. Reynolds, president ; Carl Patzlaf,
vice president ; Oak Nolan, secretary ;
Alex. McNair, treasurer ; A. J. Cohn, H.
Crenshaw and M. P. Leach, finance
committee. The commission has about
decided to make those who have water
motors to install meters and pay for
the amount of water used.
The entertainment and basket social,
given at the Long Prairie school house
on Friday evening, was well attended,
regardless of unfavorable weather. Vocal
and instrumental mnsic, recitations, etc.,
constituted the program, which was well
rendered, and reflected credit upon every
participant, The receipts from the sale
of baskets, over $30, were due alike to
the generosity of the gentlemen present
arid to the pleasing auctioneering of Mr.
Henry Rogers.

13 head of cattle, consisting of 1 cow,
upward of 6 years old; one cow 5 or 6
yrar old, one coming three-year old and
ten steers of various colors and ages,

description owned by P. C. Warren, of

Prospects for the coming year are
good, but prices will probably not be as
high as the past year. Stocks of cheese
in the county are about three thousand
boxes. However, at this writing it ap
pears that before new cheese comes into
the market in any great quantity, stocks
will be materially reduced.

Robert Jones has returned from Port
land, where be s|ient the holidays with
bis brother, Clarence.
E. T. Coulsen has a family of seven
bright children, who attend school at
East Beaver, their teacher being Miss
White. When we asked Vlr. Coulson how
many children he had in his family he
asked Mary, and she told us.
Seth Moon has sold his place to James
Woods for $4,700, and the fotmer will
go to California.
Wm. Thon has returned from his trip
to Balliston and Portland.
Francis Welch returned Irom a trip to
Salem and Portland.
C. J. Crook spent one night withWelch
Bros., north of Blaine, where he was
right royally entertained by hunting and
good wholesome bachelor's fare,
Called on Mr. Oberhumer, who lives
on bis homestead on East Beaver Creek.
He is an Austrian by birth, a bachelor,
aud apparently in good health, with the
exception of what he calls a enneer on
the right eye. Cutting off the superflu
ous growth on the eye lid with scissors,
and applying sheep Barrel poultice, is his
system of treatment.
Miss McAllister, of the Hemlock Times,
a paper written for the Literary Society,
desires the co-operation of all those in
terested in the social and moral life of
Hemlock and vicinity.
A. W. Phelps, engineer at the oil well,
was at bis post with 95lbs. of steam and
■ pleasant smile when we called. He
gave us the depth of the well as 1,600ft.,
and the depth per day varies from six
inches to 50ft.

Mr. Smith is the kind parent of two
babes which he adopted from the infants'
home.
Casper Sclilappi iuforms me that the
school house in district No. 33 was built
with the view in mind to give the pupils
all the light from the left side of the
room, as a cross light was partly to
blame for much of the defective eyesight
in this county. That this school room is
a success for light and appointment is a
fact. That Miss Oliver is a credit to it is
also a fact.
