Up To The Assessor.
The House did its duty by passing the
Beals bill to compel owners of timber
land to furnish a cruise of their timber
to the assessor, but the Senate, which
appears to have been organized in he
interest of the tax dodging capitalists
and franchise grabliers, defeated the
measure, ’as they did many other ex-
cellent bills passed by the House.
Now it is up to the assessor. He has
had his salary raised to a decent figure,
and be can verj’ easily demonstrate to
the people that he deserved the raise bv
compelling the the timber owners to pay
something like a just tax upon their
holdings. At present the highest assess
ment on timber lands in this county is
$14 per acre. Some of it is worth $1,000
per acre and, Mr. Laws admits that this
is only guess work, as he has no means
of knowing the true value of land, and
the owners petsistentlv refuse to show
their cruise. There is but one thing for
the assessor to do and that is to guess
higher. Assess the timber land at such
a figure that the owners will be erm.
pel led to make its true value known in
order to secure a reduction. We believe
Mr. Laws will do this. The timber own
ers have defrauded Columbia countv of
enough tax money, if put into a fund for
that purpose, to pay the salaries of its
officials for all time to come. There is
no reason w hy they should be permitted
to escape paying just share of the burden.
They are taking the value off of the land
and when they have denuded it they will
move to Portland and live in ease upon
the money he made in Columbia County.
Generation after generation of farmers
will five on the farms and improve and
build up the country, but the timber
owner is not a genuine home maker, but
a get rich quick speculator who cares
nothing for Columbia County except to
work it for his own private gain and, as
far as possible, compel the genuine set*
tiers to foot the bills.—The Oregon
Nlist.
