“Blended whiskey’’ is getting its in
nings under the new pure food law. The
“blend” is found to consist of pretty
much anything else than whiskey.

Every patriotic citizen will approve
the idea of building another big Ameri

built the navy department should be
preparing plans for a still bigger one.

SENATE IN POWER OF COR
PORATIONS
O House Veritable Shambles
for Bills Against Plu'.ocrats.

From the Oregonian.
r A »laughter pen for bill* against the
wb<4, mail fittingly described the late Ore-
thftfn Senate. The term seems well chosen,
dior a* a matter of fact, the upper chain
pier was aX-veritable shambles for bill*
TiiiflFpfnuicd corporations. A big cor
poration lobby was buisy during the
last three week* of the session on the
“people’» bill».’’ Among those which
they killed in the senate, after they had
passed the House, were the following :
Beals' timber tax bill. Chase’s Coos
Bay land grant bill, Freeman’s tax
commission. Settlernier's hack tax col
lection bill, Simmons’ bill to abolish the
3 percent tax rebate, Coffey'» gas fran
cliise repeal bill, net-weight clause in
Brown's pure food bill, Northup's bill
placed 25 year limit on franchises and
Beales' taxation amendment bill.
With these bills went also Beveridge’s
free text book' bills, though how they
bit corporations is not clear.
Among those who wrought mightily
for protection of corporations were S.
B. Linthicum, W. P. Ready, J, N Teal.
Sanderson Reed and Frank Griffith, who
were in the thick of nearly every fight,
lobbying by day and exercising their
persuasive powers on committees by
night.
To their ranks should be added (he
railroad workers, who, unlike the others
received a sour lemon, among them be
ing W. W. Cotton, W, D. Fenton. S. C.
Spencer, Clyde
Fulton and J.
Weatherford.
One provision of the immigration bill
as passed by the senate gives the presi
dent full authority to exclude |apanese
laborers at his discretion. The word dis
cretion, when exercised by a man like
Roosevelt, means that there will be jio
war.

“Fortify the coast,’’ exclaims a Los
Angeles pa|wr. That city is fourteen
miles from the ocean, but Japan is cer
tain to have the latest thing in guns if it
can borrow the money to pay for them.
The reappearance of those mysterious
lights that kept the New England coast
guessing nine years ago may be the next
Pacific sensation.

Oliver Cromwell had his troubles but
was never compelled to drive back a
storming column uf women demanding
suffrage. He might have suggested that
they first prove their prowess by fight
ing the cavaliers. Cromwell suffered a
great defeat at the hands of the Irish
women. He divided the island among
his soldiers and then the women married
the soldiers and taught the children to
speak Gaelic.
