The Church Without a Preacher.
TO THE EDITOR TILLAMOOK HEADLIGHT.
*' And when lie came to bimself.”
Until a mar. comes to himself ills right
and proper to be urged by someone to
do what he had ought to.
The Independent church is founded
on this proposition, that God has eni-
bued every ratioual man with a sense of
right from wrong, and the moment a
man resolves to follow that sense, he is
above the ju-isdiction of the preacher,
that a man lias a more concise concep
tion of right from his natural light
within, than could ever be conveyed to
iiiiu by the preacher.
1 belonged to a church that had no
preacher. Eich ineinl>*r paid 5 cents a
month into the sick fund. There were
two or three casea of sickness and desti
tution relieved. Yet the fund increased.
There was a general good feeling in the
church, and no one was embarra seed for
the support of the church. Afterward
we called a preacher, and we had all we
could do to pay the preacher, besides
we voted to transfer ths poor fund to
wards the preacher's salary. There was
a general diaaatiafaction over who was
not paying their share. The preacher
claimed that lie could place a lion on the
church property to recover his pay.
Preaching implies that there ia some
thing that God wants that we don’t
know about, that there is something to
be done or undone.
The shepherd takes Ilia flock out by
day and guarda it, but when It is in
within the fold he leaves it to itself.
The Independent church ia a fold for

Many a young man fancies that to
do the grand, one eliould become a

see that tliey had very undesirable lives
Noah never made a convert. Jonah
lived in the wha>< and John came from
the wilderness. Christ had no place tn
sleep. Pau! was persecuted. The world
baa always been against the preaclier.
Christ said woe be unto yon if the world
speaks well of you. The preacher who
caters to the world, disgraces his calling.
Many a man compromise« with llie
