customary for persons to prove up on
homesteads by making occasional visits
to them. That being the case, it looks to
us that it is not so much the fault of the
people who have sworn falsely to obtain
a homestead as it is in allowing the cus
tom of dodging the land laws to pre
dominate. If one person obtained land
that way it naturally follows that the
next person would want to do likewise.
What the government intends doing
with those who did not make permanent
residence and swore falsely that they had
done so when proving up, we do not
know, but we do know this that if ever
the government does start in it is going
to catch a lot of persons in the muck
rake who did not think that they were
doing very wrong when they proved up
at a time when government officials
allowed a loose system to become a cusM
tom.

It looks as though the liquor interests
are ready to do anything to defeat the
local option law. This is not surprising
in the least. The liquor interests have
run a good many towns in Oregon and
have had numerous mayors and council
men as their puppets, and for that rea
son they imagine there are plenty of such
puppets to be obtained again. But the
trouble is, with the increasing sentiment
against saloon rule, but few prominent
men want to be classed as “saloon can
didates,’’ Especially is this true amongst
business men. Saloon rule has had its
day in Oregon and the local option law’
has put a weapon in the hands of the
common people that has already brought
about an improved condition of affairs.
It was the lawless arrogance of saloon
keepers and the corrupt methods adopt
ed by the Wholesale and Retail Liquor
Dealers’ Association to bribe state legis
lators which aroused the people of Ore
gon It is a fight against saloon rule
that is a prime factor in the local option
fight today, not that the people are ad
vocating strict temperance any more
now than they did a few years ago. It
is a fight against saloon rule and the
lawless element that is always at the
beck and call of a saloon boss that the
people are fighting. That is all. It was
so in Tillamook. As long as the saloon
and liquor interests keep up their fight
against the common people, it will only
create that much more public sentiment
against them.
It is to be hoped that the toll road ad
vocates won’t make people pay “blood’’
money fortaying their prayers. We guess
they’ed do so if they could get a con
tract to that effect.

We understand that the law firm of

reputation to gain, Attorney Johnson
made the wisest move in his life.

The settlers on the Wilson river are
praying to be arrested for pulling down
the illegal toll gate. We are glad to see
that the settlers are getting a little stiff
ness in their backs and are ready to fight
to protect their rights.

No one can say that the Headlight
man is afraid to express his opinion, nei-
their is he a policy man, but simply a

please.

It ought todawn on business men that
as it is the rural population in Oregon
that is voting for local option, it must
be that they prefer a “dry’’ to a ‘‘wet’’
town to do their trading in. As it is the
rural districts from which the small cities
obtain their trade, it seems that business
men ought to get wise, that is if they
study the wishes of their customers and
the people who bring trade to a city.

We have heard a great deal of late in
the Oregonian how some of the “first
families" in Portland have gobbled up
franchises in that city in recent years, and
paid little or nothing for them. Well,
Portland need not think it has a mono
poly of that, class of gentry. Why, they
can be found all over the state, but we
will gamble that those ir. Tillamook have
had more “pups’’ who have gone wrong
than in any other citv of its size.
