STEEL STOVES 8c RANCES
Constant watching at the bedside of a.
dving brother and his ciitially ill mother
for more than a week, practically with
out rest, sleep or food, was too much
for E. F. Cornett, a sawmill man of
Boring, and while on his wav to catch
a train for Sellwood, where he was to
marry Miss Ada L. Baldwin, last night,
postponed. That he made every en
deavor to meet the engagement nt the
appointed hour is shown in some of the
events leading up to his rudden collapse.
Cornett’s brother at| Tdlamook had
been ill for some time, and for the past
week his condition became more seri
ous, but Monday afternoon a change
for the better came, and so the pros
pective bridegroom secured a horse
and rode to Forest Grove, a distance of
nearly 60 miles, in order to catch the
first train to Portland. Arriving here
vesterday morning, he hastened to
Sellwood to participate in the prepara
tions for the wedding that were lieing
made at the home of the bride’s parents,
Mr. and Mrs. Thomas R. Baldwin, 621
Lexington avenue.
It was while there that he received
a telegram from Tillamook announc
ing the death of his brother. Though
stunned by the unexpected news he
hired an automobile and drove at once
to Boring, and then to Estacada, to get
his wedding outfit and the best man.
He returned to Boring, and his family
noticed that he was nervous and wor
ried, but he said that he felt all right.
A few minutes later he was picked up
unconscious and taken to his hotre, and
placed under a physician’s care.
It was 10 .o'clock in the evening be
fore Cornett’s sister could get Sellwood
by long distance telephone and explain
to the waiting bride and guests the
cause of her brother’s failure to appear.
Meanwhile all the details lor the
wedding had been arranged. The house
was festooned with palms, flowers and
electric lights, while a beautiful floral
and foliage archway had been erected
in the parlor, beneath which the young
couple were to be pronounced man and
wife. The guests to the number of
nearly 100 and the minister, Rev. Dana
A. Thompson, pastor of the Sellwood
Presbyterian Church, were there. The
wedding dinner was ready and scores
of beautiful gifts were displayed on a
large table in the sitting room.
Everything was ready, but the bride-
groom did not cone.
When the teleghone message was re
ceived and the bridegroom’s illness ex
plained to the guest9, Mr. and Mrs.
Baldwin turned the wedding party into
an informal reception for the intended
bride, their daughter.
Mr. Baldwin stated that the wedding
would take place as soon as his son in-
la w-to be has recovered.—Telegram.
