To some people,getting into politics ia
a poor investment.
Probably Sheriff
Woolfe can bear us out in this.
at * *
Oh, my ! Is a newspaper man ileserv
mg of a whipping for telling the truth
and exposing "graft ?" Maybe, they are
-an Tillamook.
* M *
Tillamook ought to hnve an annual
county fair, something that will adver
tise the county and which should bring
together the best stock and products of
the county.
* M *
E.W. Stanley, who was in the sheriff's
office for a number of years, informs us
tbat neither the sheriff nor the deputy
received extra pay for making nrrests in
justice court casts.
» » *
Rollie's liver is out of whack this week,
as the election did not go to suit him
Poor fellow. But then, no one has any
sympathy for him, not even the defeated
democratic candidates.
* * *
It wouldn't hurt the main streets of
the city and it wouldn't hurt the street
Commissioner either if he put in his time
scraping off the mud and clearing up
the city instead of hanging tound.
* *
Governor Chamberlain was re-elected
It does beat the band how Oregon voters
fall all over themselves when being flat
tered by political flattery. George is a
dabster at flattery, and knows exactly
how to rub it in when he has an audience
before him.
» * *
Judge Conder lost Yamhill county by
Over 500 votes. Who was the political
hoodoo you had for mascot, Judge ? We
are sure thia was a new experience in
Mr. Conder's political career, and it is
safe to say that he never ran up against
a snag like that before.
* * *
Probably it would be wise to call the
attention of the newly elected county
court to the large outstanding indebted,
■less of Tillamook county, with a view of
wiping it off the next few year. A num-
her of the counties in Oregon appear to
lie tn king great pride in being out of debt
and are adyertiaing this to attract new
settlers.
* ♦ *
The democrats are again boosting W.
J. B.yan for the presidency. With Bryan
in the saddle on two former occasions,
they did not succeed, but with Roosevelt
lip as the republican rough rider Bryan
wouldn’t be in it. Not that we want our
democratic brethren to loose heart ata
time when they are all buoyed up with
■ome kind of a presentiment they they
are going to land the president’v with
Mr. Bryan.
* * *
It waa quite natural to expect that the
Herald would whine and beef because the
republicans made a clean sweep in the
county, hence it has started into whine
at the Headlight. Rollie tried to cut a
big caper by jumping in at the primary
election, which caused quite a bit of rid
icule und laughter in most every part of
the county. It is really too bad that the
Herald is disappointed at the result of
the election, and it does the Headlight
good to hear it whine, whine, whine.
* * *
It is to lie hoped that when the county
judge elect lakes ovet the reins of gov
ernment in this county, the county court
ought to pay a Estle more attention to
improving the roads to Little Nestucca,
Woods, Blame, Sandlake, Netarts and
Nehalem. We sav give these places a
square deal in road improvements, for it
seemi to be the opinion of settlers living
in those sections that too much monev
has liven extended on the main thorough
fares, to the neglect of other places.
There appears to be a good deal of
satisfaction amongst republicans, espe
cially those who stayed with their party,
that the entire county ticket was elect
ed. and another thing is they have con
fidencein the new administration that
the county’s and the taxpayers’ interests
will be well looked after. The large vote
cast for H. F. Goodspeed, who polled
684 to 214 cast for S. A. Brodhead, or a
plurality of 469 over the democratic and
555 over the socialist candidates, goes
to prove the confidence the people have
in the newly elected judge doing the
right thing and giving all parts of the
county a square deal.
« * M
The socialist vote in Tillamook county
was 125. hut W. C. Wolfe, their candi
date for sheriff, fell short of his party
vote by 38 votes, and G. A. Cobler fell
short 44 votes. Was there a bit ol trad
ing between the democratsand socialists
bv which socialists were to vote for the
democratic sheriff and treasurer and the
democrats were to vote for the socialist
candidate for county commissioner, or
did the slum in the socialist vote go to
the republican candidates ? Put your
own construction upon it. Wealways
thought that socialists voted straight
until this election, but we see they don't.

With this edition the H eadlight will
enter upon its nineteeth birthday. It is
still healthy and strong, having gone
through its tender years without any
serious troulile from colic or convulsions
in cutting its teeth. And is a welcome
visitor once every week into the homes of
a large numlier of people in this county.
It has bucked upugainst quite a few pol
iticians und ’’gratters,” and shook up
quite a tew of them. The H eadlight
has a large number of staunch friends,
and a newspaper that is outspoken and
tearless is sure to have someenemies, but
that does not cut much figure, tor the
H eadlight is popular with the people
and is a bi g factor in the county.
* * »
The H eadlight is accused of defeating
Sheriff Woolfe. A little incident like that
does not concern us much. If Woolfe hail
lieen content with his $1,600 a year sal.
ary and not drawn down double pay to
which he is not entitled, the election pro.
bably might have resulted different It
was the H eadlight ' s exposure of that
which cost Woolfe his deteat. And it
was proper criticism, lor Woolfe has no
more right to the money he has drawn
down tor making nrrests than any of our
readers, and it should be returned to the
county. And trom another source conies
the accusation that the H eadlight came
near deleating Crenshaw liecause it calle. I
attention to Woolte drawing double pay.
What absurdity. Such silly talk is only
made by those who wanted to see Cren
shaw delealed.
