The Liquor Dealers in Politics.
The liquor dealers, as an organization,
should keep out of politics. They have
had this admonition given them of late,
as well as several times before, in a very
striking way.
Suppose the furniture
dealers, or the restaurant men, should
attempt to make politics a hand-maiden
of business, would not the voters resent
it at the polls, as they have done in the
case of the liquor dealers ?
They would and should do so. The
liquor dealers’ meddling hand in politics
is no longer countenanced by the great
body of people, and the better people en
gaged in this trade should realize that
this is so.
The principal of ‘'home rule,” as in-
volved in the local option question, is
too well grounded in the minds and con-
sciences of the people to admit of suc
cessful attack on the part of the Liquor
Dealers’ association and its cohorts, no
matter how organized and forcefully
conducted.
The liquor dealers, as an organization,
had better retire from politics, for that
is the only safe way out of trouble lor
them.—Journal.
The Agricultural Committee of the
House very sensibly decided to abolish
the appropriation for free seeds, which
for many years has disgraced the great
farm supply bill. So when the measure
was reported, this particular item was
left out, but when the bill came up in
Congress the demagogues rallied in force,
raised a great row and demanded that
the grab should be reinstated. After a
spirited debate this was done and the
new law will soon provide for the old
annual waste of money. Several speak
ers insisted that the appropriation was
demanded by the farmers, but this is
false, as our farmers as a class, as well
as practically all the agricultural papers
have long demanded the abolition of this
graft. They realized that farmers have
no right to ask the government to sup
ply them with seeds any more than
workers in other industries have a right
to ask lor free tools or raw materials.
Besides, no good conns to agriculture
from this degrading graft,. All sensible
farmers and gardeners prefer to select
and buy their own seeds, as then they
know what they are getting.

Considerable astonishment has been
caused by the suddenly (developed radi
calism of the supposedly conservative
old Senate. When the railroad rate bill
came over to the House it was predict-
ed that the Senate would not tolerate
such an extreme measure but would
either kill it outright or so emasculate it
that it would be worthless. But the
Senate lias gone far beyond the House,
as will be seen from the following list of
amendments which it has adopted : To
cut off passes, making pipelines common
carriers and so subject to the Interstate
Commerce Commission ; to divorce rail
roads from the business of mining and
marketing coal; to torce railroads to put
in switches tor shippers on tea sonable
terms ; and to compel them to give
equally good service and like accommo
dations to all persons paying the same
compensation for interstate transporta*
tation; putting the Pullman Palace Car
Company and exprés«* companies under
the provisions of the bill. It is further
suggested that the imprisonment pen
alty of the original interstate commerce
act be restored________________
