The Anli-Saloon League is sending

Law. We have not been advised as to

movements when he gets into the

Rev. W. B. Hollingshead, presiding
elder of the M.E. church, will fpreach at
Bay City on Sunday morning, May 20,
and in this city in the evening of the
same day. On Monday evening, May
21, he will address the people on the pro
posed amendment to the local option
law.

Mr. J. J, Bowser, of Blaine, who carat
near landing the nomination for joint
representation, was in the city on Tues
day, and although defeated he is right in
line to help elect the republican ticket.
There is one thing that Mr. Howser did
not like, and that was the report that
was circulated about him that he was
the whisky men’s candidate. He denies
this. There is one thing that can be said
in Mr.Howser’s favor, that while a num.
her of prominent republicans refused to
run for this office he was making an ac-
tiye campaign and came near landing
the nomination, thus showing that he
had nearly as many admirers as Mr.
Beals. Such, however, are the uncertain
ties when one enters the political arena,
for Mr.Howser is not the only good man
amongst so many who had to abide by
the will of the party.
Hon. Willis C. Hawley, republican
nominee for congress, came in on Tues
day on a political tour and was well re
ceived by the people of the county. He
is a fine speakerand had large audiences,
his remarks being frequently applauded.
He spoke at Nehalem on Tuesday even
ing, in Tillamook City on Wednesday
evening, at Beaver on Thursday after,
noon and at Cloverdale in the evening.
Mr. Hawley, in discussing the political
issues, dwelt upon the progress and the
prosperity of the United States under
republican administrations and then
contrasted that with the democratic
administration under Cleveland, which
brought financial and. industrial stagna
tion and a heavy bonded indebtedness
upon the country. He also showed that
it was the republican partv which was
breaking up the trusts, and in which
President Roosevelt was taking a sue.

Work on Tillamook Road.
F obest G rove , Or., May 3.—The Port
land-Nehalem-Tillamook railroad is now
within a short distance of the little
town of Banks, eight miles north of,
Forest Grove. Large gangs of men are
at work and the roadbed is being rushed
as fast as possible. The town of Banks
will have train connections with Port-
land via Hillsboro in a very short time.
Another force of the same company is
now grading on the Tillamook division
beyond Buxton. This company’s line
passes through the most fertile part of
Washington county and already several
towns have sprung up, while others arc
on a boom.
The scene of the big gang now work’
ing is at Roy, where a town has just
sprung up with stores and many houses,
one and one half miles east of Banks.
