Walter L. Tooze, who was defeated
for the Republican nomination for con
gress, wishes to thank all his loyal
friends for the generous support given
him.
He certainly made a whirlwind cam
paign and made the bosses tremble with
fear. If there had been a larger turn
out of the farmers he might have landed
the prize. Hut he dies game.
He was the first man to telegraph his
congratulations to the successful candi
date and pledge him his hearty support.
He showed the sterling character of his
Republicanism in the following telegram;

Although notthechoice of the Repub
licans of this district as a candidate, he
is not sulking in his wigwam, but will
be found fighting for the ticket.
For the large and generous support he
got at the primary, Mr. Tooze has
great reason to be proud, and his friends
are certainly proud of him. He made a
clean and strenuous campaign and takes
his defeat like a man and a gentleman
and a true Republican.—Salem Journal.
Dr. Wiley, the government chemist
who has gained some notoriety through
food experiments, declares that two mil
lion children in this country have been
secrificed by drinking impure milk. It
would be difficult to challenge this state
ment if there >ai need to, for no one
could positively trace the cause of all
diseases that result in death. No doubt
impure milk is blamed for many things
unjustly, but it is the cause of enough
trouble to make it subject to close super
vision. The milk supply of all big cities
is not what it ought to be, but it is
much better than it was some years ago.
The demand tor pure food, and the insis
tence of tbe public in getting it has made
quite a difference in the quality of the
products manufactured and sold, but
there ia still much room for improvement
and the crusade should be prosecuted as
vigorously as possibly until the adulter
ants are completely driven out of the
market. An article should be branded
exactly what it is, so that the consumer
will know what he is getting. The food
market will always be flooded with im
itation products unless the vigilance of
the law puts a [stop to it. '

The American Farmer says the Social
istic cranks and other agitators have
hern predicting a panic for the last ten
vears. and none has come yet. On the
contrary, 1905 was the banner year in
tbe history of the United States. The
fellows who are trying to excite discon
tent and revolution, who are chronic cotn-
plainers and disturbers of the peace, de-
sire bard times in hopes that it will give
them recruits for their fool theories and
treasonable schemes ¡by throwing men
outoi employment. These fellows are
greater nuisances than the boll wevil or
chinchbug, and should be crushed with
as little ceremony. There is no room in
this country for criminal agitators of
any kind. There will lie no panic as
long as there are good crops and fair
prices fcr them.
