<To-mormw (Friday) the republican
and democratic parties will nominate
their tickets under the new primary law, •
and it is for the voters to say who they j
want nominated. All the aspirants are
more or less known, and for that reason 1
the H eadlight intentionally refrained
from saying one unkind word about any
of them, although some of them foolishly
attacked the editor and tried to make
him the storm center. As to that we
shall have something to say later which
will cause as big a surprise as the Tilla.
mook land frauds. But as to the county
ticket, the H eadlight is not boosing any
of the aspirants. In our judgment there
are a number of good men running on
the republican side of the house, and there
are others who should receive no sup
port whatever. It is not for us to say
who the people should vote in this pri
mary election, other than to say vote for
men who are capable, men who are clean
and who will have the backbone to en-
force the law.
Terrible Loss of Life
and Property-
S an F rancisco , April 18 (Noon.>—The
City of San Francisco was visited this
morning by a terrible earthquake, which
has laid the main bujiness section to the
ground.
Over 1000 people have lost their lives
in the first shock in the falling buildings
and thousand« more were injured by
falling debris.
The city is in flames and no water to
fight the fire, the water mains having
all been ruptured by the upheaval.
Fire is raging south of Market street
and dynamite is tieing used to check
the flame«, with little effeot, as a strong
wind is blowing from the south.
The city, from Kearney street to the
bay, has sunk over three feet and in
other portions of the city the damage to
property has been terrific.
The most prominent buildings and
land marks in the city that were des.
troyed are the Palace Hotel and annex,
the City Hall and the 13-story building
of the San Francisco Call, one of the
finest buildings in the world.
The damage is something awful to
look upon and at present a tidal wave is
expected, which usually follows in the
wake of an earthquake.
S an F rancisco , Calf., April 18th.—
The earthquake that visited this city this
a.in. has laid the city of ’Frisco, to a
large extent to the ground and the
werid aspect of and the turmoil has
made of this quiet city of yesterday an
inferino an earth.
Flames are raging south of Market
street and the populace that are not
fleeing for their lives are using every
avilable means to check the fire and stop
the destruction of property.
Dynamite is being used with some
success but the strong south wind is
fanning the flames into furry and the
advance of the flames cannot be stop
ped without water. The city mains are
broken in many places from the up
heaval and the city is without water.
The finest buildings and which have
been the pride of the city, have fallen.
Tilt stately 13 story Cali building and
the mignifiuant Palace Hotel and the
palatial City Hall, and lots of others
which have been raised to the ground.
