The Register was authorized jester-
day to announce that the Oregon
Coast & Eastern Railroad company
that has been looking over the W ¡1.
lamette valley for the past year lias
secured ample financial backing and
will immediately begin the constrnc-
tion of a railroad from Portland to
Tillamook, and thence southward to
Coos Ba y and then to Humbolt bay in
California, touching the intermediate
harbors along the coast, including Ya-
quina, Siuslaw, Umpqua and Alesa.
The part that interests Eugene the
most is the fact that a line will also be
run from the coast through Eugent
across the mountains to Ogdon where
connections will be made with several
transcontinental lines.
The Political Bosses’ Candidate
Prof. Hawley is a tool in the hand» oi
Salem's political bosses. A very humil
iating position for a person of the pro
fessor's dignity to occupy. But such is
the case. The president of Willamette
University is, then, the political bosses’
candidate for congress. Wait until after
the primary and then see what the
voters think of Salem’s political machine
candidate. The day of boss rule in
politics is a thing of the past, but it is
not surprising that Salem should still
cling close to the political machine
methods. Prof. Hawley ought to have
known better to have tied himself up
with the (political bosses, for he is too
good a man to be mixed up in all the
dirtv work his backers are resorting to
to.defeat Walter L, Tooze. Here is what
the Silvertonian-Appeal has to say on
this point :
“ Salem is evidently trying to follow
the old and long established rule of
claiming all state and county officers,
and it is not so very much surprising
after all that a few of the old machine
gang have centered their ambition upon
the unfortunate professor. It is a pity
that they will use a good man—innocent
of the motive—to fight their old battles.
“ When the correspondent in Salem
cities about twentv-one of the old line
leaders in the party, he has expressed
practically all of Hawlev’s support in
that city. 7 here are hundreds of young
republicans in Salem, who are interested
in Mr. Tooze’s candidacy and who are
working hard for him in this campaign
The day has gone by when a few
old sore head machine politicians can
govern the nomination of candidates,
and under the direct primary law the
farmers and country districts are the
people, and they will improve the op
portunity this year to regain that which
has l>een lost through the Salem hog in
years past.

representative they want in Congress

agreed upon a general plan for railroad
extension into the Northern territory.
A new company is being organized,
according to report, which is to do three
things :
First, to tase over Ripley’s San Fran
cisco & Northwestern lines, with its
valuable Eureka terminals.
Second, to take over Harriman and «C
Foster’s California & Northwestern line
between Willits and Tiburon and this
city, and probably the North Shore or
Sausalito road.
Third, to build the 100 mile gap north
of Willits to the southern end of Ripley s
San Francisco & Northwestern road, 31
miles south of Eureka.
