INNOCENT.
Tells His Story of How His
VZife and Daughter Met
their Death.
A. J. Hembree, who was charged with
the murder of his wife and daughter,was
taken to McMinnville on Friday last by
Sheriff Woulfe, and will remain in the
county jail there until the April term of
the circuit court in this county. Deputy
District Attorney W. H. Cooper has had
a stenographer, »Miss Garfield, employed
typewriting the evidence of the witnesses
he examined when inquiring into tbe
case. There appears to be some revolt
ing stories told about Hembree, and it is
a good thing for him that this was not
made public. Thus far the evidence is
circumstantial. When Hembree arrived
at McMinnville the Oregonian reporter
interviewed him, and he made this state
ment ;
Where the Fire Started.
Tilt fire started down stairs and was
first noticed about 1 o’clock in the morn
ing. I ran down stairs and found the
fire burning fiercely under the stairs. I
got water from a tu'j and threw on it
with little or no effect. Then I, my wife
and daughter carried some bedclothes
and other articlesdown stairs and threw
them out of the front door.The h< use was
cloth-lined and papered and we were
soon driven from the sleeping-rooms.
We then took some things from the si1.-
ting-room, then I removed some Hour,
etc..from the kitchen.

never abused my family in any way
when drunk. 1 know that I did treat
some people contemptible and possibly
unreasonable, but that was because
thev had treated me in the same way
