What good have the toll ronda done

What harm have the toll roads done
Tillamook County ?
• * *
Anyway, what kind of a "graft” are
the toll roads upon the people ?
» ♦ *
Into whose pockets have most of the
money gone that was collected in recent
years on the toll roads ?
* * *
The H eadlight wants to see a good
public highway in and out of the countv,
well graveled and free from toll gates.
If you want to get into that kind of a
band wagon next election, get into the
H eadlight band
wagon and help
whoop the good cause along and to a
final issue. "All aboard, gentlemen !”
for it’s going to be a clean cut issue b<-
tween toll ronds nnd free roads. Our
motto is : "Get out of the Road fot the
Tillamook Free Roaders I" And the toll
gates will have to, for the Free Roaders
have thrown the gauntlet down, are in
fora determined scrap and don’t pro
pose to let up until they triumph. That
is the class of people who are invitedin
to the H eadlight ' s band wagon to take
a seat alongside those who have taken
off their coats and opened their purses
to rid the county of toll roads.
* * *
As long ns a few persons can make a
little money out of toll roads the county
can go plumb to—well, the hot place, lor
all they care. But there's hell fire iudig
nation amongst the people, though, and
when it br-aks loose next spring, those
who have advocated toll roads and had
the audacity to bartered away the peo
pie’s rights in leasing a toll road for 50
years will then know something of this
hell fire indignation. The people for once
aroused themselves tn Tillamook, and in
their indignation wiped out the saloon
gambling "graft," which was a curse to
the city and county. The next "graft”
to go is the toll roads, for that is not
only a “graft” upon the citizens, but it
is a "graft” upon the traveling public
and those who are looking for homes,
who, wl.en thev find themselves “graft
ed” in that wav, leave in disgust and
locate elsewhere. The population of
Tillamook County hns only increased in
five years to the extent of 51 persons, so
it can be plainly seen what the toll rouds
are doing for the countv.

FIND OF DIAMONDS
NEW WINTER FABRICS.
Great Excitement is Created
the Necanicum.
S easide . Or., Noy. 19.—During the
past week there has been intense excite-!
ment on the Necanicnm. The secret ol it
all lies in the fact that an ochre mine,
which is being developed just above the
bridge across the Necanicum on the Elk
Creek road, has been yielding precious
stones. Diamond. and Rubies are said
to be in evidence and a number of people
have located claims.
The ochre is of finest quality and plen
ty of the best fireclay ever discovered is
there, but when precious stones were dis
covered the excitement reached fever
heat nnd people were coming from Port
land to he guided to the diamond fields,
everything looked good; to the seeker
after precious stones and every pebbel
thev saw looked to them like a diamond
in the rough. They are hoping that the
digging will not "soon be over,” but will
continue until thev have secured bushels
of precious stones.
The ochre is being sacked nnd shipped
to Portland to be subjected to the neces
sary refining process, and from present
indications a great industry will be
built up nenr Seaside, which will give
employment to a large number of men.
This, aside from any precious stones
which may be found in the mine, is the
most desirable feature connected with
the enterprise.

only part of the bondsmen named in the
