Anonymons Letter Causes
Another Surprise.
From all appearance the Federal grand
jury is not through investigation Tilla
mook County alleged land frauds, for
Saturday's Oregonian contained the fol
lowing interesting account of a land deal
in which one of the parties “squealed
Donnaher Before Jury.
Another man who appeared yrsterday
before Ibis body of men who are probing
into crooked land deals, was C. 1). Don-
naber, who, with John and D. A. Blodg
ett, of Grand Rapids, Mich., and others,
purchased the Booth Kelly lumber busi
ness. Mr. Donpaher’s appearance before
the grand jury was the result of an
anonymous letter, or rather two anony
mous letters, which were received by
Mr. Heney. The first anonymous letter
received by the Government officials
charging Donnaher, the Blodgetts and
Claud Thayer with land frauds in Tilla
mook County,was received December 14:
1904. In this letter the writer says
that the persons mentioned had obtain
ed 37 claims in township 2 north, of
range 7 west, in Tillamook County.
The anonymous writer had a motive
for giving the unsought for information
to the government officials, and he did
not have any hesitancy in telling it. He
says, "They all beat me outof my share;
that's why I'm squealing." He also
stated in his letter that Donnaher ah.
tained script on something like 900
acres, and that Thayer helped him. The
writer explains at some length that an
investigation was once started, but that
it did not get past John Hall, and he
stated that the investigation was stop
ped because some one was “2 afraid of
Carey, Mays and St. Rainer.” The in
dictment against Claud Thayer resulted
in the investigation; it was the second
letier that resulted in the subpenaing of
Mr. Donnaher.
Has Important Deal.
It seems that Mr. Donnaher has been
in Portland for several days on import
ant lumber business. He is sai l to have
a deal on with one of the Kellys. The
deal involved a large stim of money, and
when they came to try and reach a set-
tlement there was a difference of$10,090.
While the business deal was still on both
men adjourned down to the Portland
Hotel bar, and while taking refresh
inents they still discussed the deal. As
near ns can be learned, Mr. Donnaher
wanted $80,000 aud Mr. Kelly refused
to give more than $70,000. Suddenly
one of them, which is not known, sug
gested throwing the dice. This was
agreed upon, and the difference was set
tled by one toss of the square bone«. In
tl>e history of the Portland bar there
1 as been some lively dice shaking. On
several occasions the “bones'' have been
rolled fora cold $1000, but this was
the first lime in the historv of the bar
that the stakes were $10,000, Mr. Don.
nailer won.
That Mysterious Letter.
Whether it was the winning of this
amount of money at one turn of the
dice that brought Mr. Donnaher'seneiny
into full cry after him. or whether the
wrath has been long slumbering, there
is no answer. The fact remains, how
ever, that a letter written on a Portland
Hotel letterbead, addressed on a Port
land I’o el envelope, was received nt
the District Attorney's office September
28, saving that Mr, Donnaher could
throw considerable light upon certain
land deals in Tillamook County. The
letter is written in a fine, bold hand,
without any attempt to disguise. The
anonymous writer seems to be possessed
with the same mistaken idea that some
other few misguided fools are. that lie
cause so fur indictments have not lieen
returned against many Irishmen or
Catholics. that Mr. Henev would not
care to sulipena Mr. D innaher, and that
the government was unwilling to prose
cute the Irish.
Mr. Donnaher was seen last night nt
the Portland, tor be is a guest there, but
he had little to say about his sudden
summons to appear before the grand
jury. He seemed to lie unaware that an
anonymous letter had caused the
trouble, and stated that he could not
imagine who, or of what sex his enemy
was, that would send an unsigned letter
accusing him of land-fraud knowledge.
