How
th«
Miaauuri
rifted by th« Pmik« of a M4a-
«biavoua Resident for a
Number of tear*.
When Thomas P. Ogd«en died a few
days ago the ghosts at Gower, Mo.,
ceased terrifying the residents of that
town. Ogden, on his deathbed, con
fessed that he had been the “ghosts”
about Gower. For several years he
terrified the village, «nd while playing
one of his jokes he caused a young
man to lose his life by running against
a tree. At another time he came near
being the cause of a citizen of Gower
being lynched says a special St. Jo
seph (Mo.) correspondence of the
Chicago Inter Ocean.
In the livery stable in Gower were
box stall« for the horses. Posts were
set in the ground between the stalls
and planked up on each side. Ogiden
bought a long rubber tube and-, con
cealing himself in the haymow, let the
tube d'.>wn between the board« on one
side of a stall. Then he groaned into
the tube and the sound of his voice was
carried down to a point close to the
ground. In a little while the groan«
attracted the attention of the men
employed about the barn. They tore
the board» off on<e side of the stall, but
Ogden drew the rubber tube up, and
they found nothing. The boards were
replaced) and the groans were heard
again.
There lived in the neighborhood a
man who boasted that he was not
afraid of “ghost or devil,” and he wa«
employed to locate the cause of the
groans. He 6aid they came from the
bottom of the stall, and went to work
with a pick and1 shovel.
While he
worked the voice o-f the “ghost” en
couraged him, and when the pick
struck a rock the “ghoet” declared
that he digger had struck his bones.
Several hundred men stood around
waiting for a solution of the mystery.
When night came a lantern was hung
up in the stall, and the man who was
not afraid of ghosts worked' on.
Ogden threw a white blanket down
on the man at work in the stall, and
he leaped out of the hole with a fright
ened yell, running toward' the door
with the blanket clinging to him. The
crowd scattered and one man ran
against a tree and was killed. When
some of the men ventured back to the
place the “gh<o«-t” begged them to
continue the work of digging, but none
of them would go into the stall. The
owner of the stable finally closed the
place and’ built another barn.
On a hill near Gower stands an old
mansion built in the style that plant
ers affected before the war. It had
been vacant a number of years when
Ogden conceived the idea of giving it
the reputation of being haunted. He
had lights flitting about the place at
night, and people going near it could
hear screanus and hollow groans. The
doors would slam, and the place was
■shunned even in daylight. It wa« im
possible to sell the house, and it stand»
to-day a weather-beaten wreck.
Ogden contrived a network of wires
in the cemetery near Gow er, to which
he attached balls of cotton soaked in
kerosene. These he would light at
night and work the whole by mean-s of
a long string reaching to a thicket, a
considerable distance away, in which
he concealed himself.
The dancing
lights in the graveyard attracted the
attention of people the first night,
and before Ogden quit he had an audi
ence of more than a thousand stand
ing at a safe distance and watching the
strange sights. Many people would
not go into the graveyard in daylight
after that, and some of them removed
their dead from the dreaded place.
Afterward the ghostmaker of Gower
fixed up white figures in the cemetery,
and they could be seen swa ving about
to the accompaniment of his groans
and screams. The cemetery is almost
abandoned now on account of the repu
tation given it by the “ghosts.”
Ogden has confessed that he haunt
ed many of the hnure* about Gower,
and that he is alone reaprn.Mble for the
renutation that has attache! to the
vdire of late years. When be played
“ghost” in the livery «table In Gower
b n made the ghost declare that be was
the snirit of a man James Woodward
bad killed and buried in the stall, and
the excited crowd gathered about the
place came near lynching Woodward.
When he realized that be was m bis
deathbed Ogden called in n number of
hi« friend* and made a confession. He
eTnrecsed deep sorrow for having
caused the death of a younirman who
ran against a tree in bis fright, and
»aid he bad always refrained from
frightening women and children a«
much as possible.

Chinese Imperial SeeUa
and Jade Tablets,
Five Chinese imperial seals and 12
jade tablets from the temple at Pe
king, which were brought home by
Lieut. John B. Schoeff el, of the Ninth
infantry, were seized at the transport
dock at San Francisco by the customs
officers the other day It was supposed
at first that the tablets were of great
historical value, but more careful ex
amination convinces the customs offi
cials that they were simply ornaments
and of no particular value except as
curios. Both the tablets and seals are
beautifully done, and they will com
mand high prices as curios. It was in
tended at first to hold the relics ¡lend
ing instructions from Washington, but
later it was decided that Schoeffel
could have his property by paying the
duty. The amount has not been fixed.
The imperial seals weigh about six
pounds, are of rectangular shape,
about six inches square and three
inches in height. Carved dragons in
crouching attitudes surmount the
block, serving as handles. Chinese
characters are carved in relief on the
base of the seals, and a yellow tassel is
knotted on one of them. The tablets
are of dark green jade, each inscribed
on one side with Chinese characters
traced in gold. The five-toed dragon,
the Chinese royal escutcheon, is im
printed on the other side, also traced
in gold. The tablets are ten inches by
five, by one-half an inch in thickness.
Lieut. Schoeffel said he bought the
jade tablets of a Chinese, who did not
tell him where they came from. He
declares that if they are of any his
torical value he did not know it. He
bought them simply as curios, and has
been carting them around for two
years. He was not in the least disturbed
by the seizure.
HIGH TRIBUTE TO HIS WIFE.
At the kommers of the Borussia
student corps, which was held at
Bonn, Emperor William, who was
present referred in a speech to the
empress of Germany, who witnessed
the kommers from the gallery of the
building. Alluding to the presence of
his wife, the emperor said:
“The chroniclers record that when
our forefather« met in tournaments
it was perfectly natural that a circle
of illustrious ladies should witness
their deeds, and with pride the victor
received the wreath presented by a
lovely hand. It was thus also at Wart
burg, when they seized the harp and
lyre and sang in competition.
“Never before, so king as the his
tory of German universities has been
written, has any university received
such an honor as is conferred to-day
upon that of Bonn. In company with
the beauty of Bonn and surrounded
by ladies of princely rank, her majes
ty, the empress, the first prince*« of
the land, has appeared at a student«'
kommers. This unprecedented honor
has been accorded to the city of Bonn
and to the Borucsla student corps.
I hope and expect that all the young
members of the Borussia corps upon
whom the eye of the empress has
res'ted to-day have received an inspira

He does not propose that Dr. Theo

the experiment fail, however, then Dr.

“1 do not ask Dr. Smith or Prof.
