H onoehli ’. March 6 —The inquest into
the death ot Mrs Jane L. Stanford was
begun this afternoon in a private dining-
room of the Moana Hotel, with Deputy
Sheriff Ra v* linsquestioning the witnesses.
His interrogations did not show that
anv theory had been formulated by the
authorities, and the only suggestion of a
theory was advanced when Attornev-
General Andrews asked Miss Berner, in
cross rxamiiiation, if Mrs Stanford had
e\er expressed a desire to join her dead
husband ami son.
This the witness denied, saving that
Mrs Stanford was devoted to her lite
work, but had on a few occasions ex
pressed the hope that same day she
would lie joined to her dead relatives.
Miss Berner was generally very cool
and possessed w hile giving her testimony
and read, corrected and signed the trail-
script of her evidence in the presence of
the jury.
The testimony generally show’s that
many persons had access to the bottle
containing the bicarbonate of soda.
While the police are convinced that Mrs.
Stanford's death was unnatural they
