How foolish it is to think that saloons
bring trade to a town. When only quite
recently Tillamook City had five saloons,

We notice that two have gone out of
business for the want of the business that
some people claim that saloons bring to
a town. Take for instance the only two
towns that are of any importance in
Washington county, aud what are the
facts. Hillsboro is the county seat and
saloons are permitted. Forest Grove is
a closed town on account of the univer
sity being there Now what do we find?
Forest Grove is haying a steady growth
right along, with new industries going
in and a large number of nice residences
being put up. while on the other hand
Hillsboro is making no progress or im
provement, in fact, as a country town it
has deterioriated and gone back. Here is
a practical illustration in our neighbor-
ing county where the argument that the
saloons bring business and will kill a
town if they are closed out does not
bear out the argument, for it is actually
reversed in those two towns—the "drv”
