In those lands where horses are the
food of men, all manner of flesh goes the
way of the sausage machine. Recently
there had to be slaughtered at Ghent an
elephant well known in Belgium by the
name ot Jack, the last inhabitant of the
zoological garden, and his fesh, which is
stated to have weighed 3.800 pounds, or
nearly two tons, all went to the sansage
makers.
“ I would cough nearly all night long,’
writes Mrs. Chas. Applegate of Alex
andria, Ind., “and could hardly get any
sleep. I had consumption so bad that
it I walked a block I would cough
frightfully and spit blood, but, when
all other medicines failed, three $1 00
bottles of Dr. King's New Discovery
wHollv cured me and 1 gained 58
pounds.” It’s absolutely guaranteed to
cure Coughs, Colds, La Grippe, Bron
chitis and all Throat and Lung Troubles.
Price 50c. and $1.00. Trial bottles free

Hugh Cronin is Drowned.
Daniel G. Burr, aged 84, a survivor of
company H. Fourth regiment, recruited
at Paris, III., June 4, 1846, for the war
with Mexico, has held a reunion by him
self in the fair grounds at Paris. As he
had done annually for forty years, he
called the roll of his company from the
original roll he had written with a quill
pen and of which he had custody as
orderly sergeant of the companv. He
spent the day in meditation, eating his
picnic dinner alone.
Hugh Cronin, who was well known at
Nehalem, having lived therewith his par
ents, was drowned at McGowan, on the
Columbia river, on Thursday morning as
the result of an accident. The body was
taken to Astoria in the afternoon to
await the arrival of the deceased's sis
ters. Young Cronin had been a student
at Mount Angel and went to Astoria on
Tuesday in search of employment. He
found a position with P. J. McGowan &
Sons as mate of the sloop Ramblerand
left at once far the north shore town.
About 8 o'clock on Thursday morning
Cronin attempted to climb down a lad
der to board the Rambler, but the ladder
gave way, precipitating the young man
into the water. He did uot rise to the
surface after striking the water and the
body was not recovered until 10:30, de
spite the efforts made to rescue the hap
less young man. Examination ot the
body showed that Cronin had, in falling,
struck his hdad against the rail of the
sloop, the force of the blow rendering
him unconscious and accounted for his
failure to come to the surface after fall
ing into the water. Justice of the Peace
Dalton held an inquest over the remains,
the jury returning a verdict of accidental
death.
Cronin’s parents are dead, but he is
survived by three brothers and two sis
ters—Joseph and Francis Cronin, of As
toria ; James Cronin, of Svensen ; Miss
Theresa Cronin, of Portland ; and Miss
Mamie Cronin, of Oakland, Cal.

An old lady of New Hampshire, who
recently celebrated her eightieth birth
day by giving an elaborate supper at
which every article including the cheese
and butter was made with her own
hands, thus explained the secret of her
vigor and health : “ I never fret over
things I cannot help ; I take a nap, and
sometimes two, every day of my life ;
I never take my work to bed with me,
and I oil the manv wheels of a busy life
bv an implicit faith that there is a brain
and heart to this great universe, and
that I can trust them both.’’

Trying Against Trusting
So long as we trv to worship God to
the proposition of“ what must we do to
be saved,” we will find ourselves trying,
it is not until we look to “what has been
done” that we can learn to trust, This
is the difference between belief and un.
belief. It is purely a case of love, in
which God proffers his son a free gift,
if we accept him, and trust him. we
accept God’s love, bnt if we reject him
we reject God's love, and our only
hope is based on our trying, I shall
never be satisfied until there i< a pnblic
organization that stands for trusting
against trying.
J. C. G ove .
In certain parts of the Himalaya
Mountains the native women have a
singular wav of putting their children
to sleep in the middle of the day. The
child is put near a stream of water and
by means of a palm leaf, or a tin scoop
the water is deflected so as to run over
the back of the child's head. The water
¡louring on the child’s head apparently
sends it to sleep and keeps it so. while
the mother proceeds with her work in
the fields. No one seems ever to fear
that the baby may be drowned.
Governor Warfield, of Maryland, who
urges girl graduates not to wed early,
and says he shall not allow his daugh
ters to be married before they are 28, is
taking great chances of getting his name
into the papers as father of one of a pair
of elopers. His address was of the
nature of a “dare’’ to his daughters.
In a murder trial in Lancaster, Mo.,
last week State Attorney Smoot asked a
woman witness somequcstion about her
domestic affairs. The witness resented
the asking of such a question, saying,
“ I reckon a woman has a right to boss
her own house.’*
Mr. Smoot asked
what she meant by that, whereupon
Judge Shelton interposed ; “The remark
made by the witness is perfectly clear,
and I am confident the jury understands
what she means. They are all married
men.’’
A telegraphic wire chief wms the victim
not long ago of one of the funniest
“bulls” that ever agitated his division.
He had sent his lineman out to trace a
break in a wire near Yew York and re
pair it. Presently a teport came to him
from the flats of Jersey : “ Patched 45
East with 10 West—tell Pat O’Rielly.”
Patched means “ spliced,’’ but who was
Pat 0’Riellv, and why was it any busi
ness of his ? No O’Rielly of that name
was known to the service. Investiga
tion followed mystery, and “ tell Pat
O’Rielly ’’ proved to be only “ tempo,
rarily.”
'Persons walked about Seaside. L. I.,
during the last few da vs have stopped
and looked with amazement on two
children whose combined weight is nearly
350 pounds. The children have pretty
faces and are the picture of health. Their
parents are Mr. and Mrs. Louis Eggert
residents of Newark, N. J., where the
children were born. Harry is not quite
6 years old, but tips the scales at 215
pounds, while his sister Minnie, who is
but
years old, balances the scales at
120 pounds. Harry and Minnie are pos
sessed of enormous appetites. Four
pounds of steak for Harry is but a nor.
mal meal, and Minnie thinks nothjng of
eating a dozen or more eggs at a sitting.
Noted specialists and physicians have ex
amined the children and have wondered
at their remarkable development. Every
bit of clothing thev wear must be made
to order, and when they first arrived at
the beach their beds were broke down
under their weight.
More Survivors.
L ondon , July 5, 5:35 A. M.—Of 774
souls on the Danish steamer Norge, 128,
including Captain Gundel, are known to
have been saved up to this hour. One
of the children died in a lifeboat which
brought others to safety. For the miss
ing 646 persons small hope is entertained.
In addition to the 26 |>ersnns who
landed at Grimsby, 102 survivors were
landed at Stornoway. They were all in
a pitiable condition. Many were taken
1 to a hospital and most of them had to
be carried ashore.
| Among those on board the Energie was
Captain Gundel, of the Norge.
