PLOT OF FIENDS.
STARVED IN WOODS.
Colorado Miners Blown to Death. Young Germans Lost From Their
Quillayute Ranch.
C ripple C reek , Colo., June 6.—A
concealed assassin, by merely pulling a
wire,exploded an infernal machine, there
by instantly killing 12 miners and sever,
ly wounding 11 others, one of whom has
since died, at Independence to day. All
the killed and injured, with the exception
of two men from the Deadwood mine,
were nonunion miners employed on the
night shift of the Findley mine.
The men had quit work at 2 A. M. and
were waiting to board the suburban
train ou the Florence & Cripple Creek
Railroad and return to their homes in
Cripple Creek and Victor. Just after the
engineer of the approaching train blew
his wistle as a signal to the .miners, ac
cording to custom, a terrific explosion
occurred underneath the depot platform,
on and near 26 men were,gathered. The
platform was blown into splinters, the
depot was wrecked, and a hole 20 feet in
depth, was torn in the ground.
Bodies Hurled Five Hundred feet.
Fragments of bodies were hurled
througli space for several hundred feet,
and later were picked up still quivering.
Some ot the bodies dropped into the pit
made by the explosion, but heads, hands,
ears, legs, arms and trunks were strewn
about on all sides. Pieces of flesh were
found on buildings 500 feet away, and
bloodstained everything within a radius
of 50 feet.
The force of the explosion was felt all
over the camp, and the crash awakened
everybody. The approaching train was
stopped, and the members of the train
crew were the first men to reach the
scene of the disaster. They were joined
in a few minutes by hundreds of persons
and relief work was begun at once. A
special train was sent from Cripple
Creek, carrying physicians, nurses, of.
fleers and many others, but when it
reached Independence the injured had
already been placed on board the subur
ban train and removed to hospitals in
Victor. The mangled bodies of the dead,
pieced together as well as possible, were
removed to the Coroner’s office.
Revolver Used to Explode it.
The infernal machine with which the
diabolical work was done consisted of a
quantity of dynamite estimated at 150
to 300 pounds ; a loaded revolver and a
long, slender steel wire attached to the
trigger. The revolver was fattened so
that the pulling of the trigger would not
draw it away. The wire ran from under
the depot to the cribbing of the Delmon-
ico property, about 400 feet away,
where its entl.was fasting to the rung of
a chair. The dynamite was placed close
to the muzzle ot the revolver, which was
discharged by pulling the wire when the
engineer blew his whistle. The ball from
the revolver exploded the dynamite.
Bloodhounds Trailing Assassin.
A man was seen running down the hill
from the Deimonico after the explosion.
The Victor troops, who were ordered
out by Mayor French, were so stationed
as to keep people from passing over the
path taken by the assassin.
The infernal machine used today was
similar to the one exploded in the Vin
dicator mine on November 21, 1903,
killing two mon.
By order of Mayor H. A. Naylor, of
the National Guard, the bodies were re
moved from the Corner’s establishment
to that of another undertaker. This
action was taken on request of J. S.
Murphy, superintendent of the Findley
mine, because it was alleged that corner
James Doran had remarked before the
discovery of the machine that the death
of the men wasdue to an accident. Later,
Coroner Doran explained that although
he had spoxen of the disaster as an
“awful accident,’’ he was convinced a
terrible crime had been committed.
Amputation has been performed upon
a number of the injured, but it is almost
certain several of them will die. A ma
jority of the dead and injured vVere sin
gle men. but several had families living
i n the district.
Soldiershave already arrested a trio of
editorsand printers of the Daily Record
and City Marshal O’Connell, and put
them it the bullpen. All the wealthy
mineowners are carrying gun®.
V ictor , Colo., June 6 —Rioting broke
out in this citv thia afternoon while a
mass meeting was being held to discuss
the murder of 13 nonunion miners by
means of an infernal machine at Inde
pendence. Forty shots were fired into a
crowd in the street. One man was kill
ed, another died in the hospital, and
eight persons, at leat, injured.
H oquiam , Wash.,June 6.—The remains
of Martin Ertle, sitting bolt upright
against the root of a hemlock tree, where
three months before, in the desperation
of hunger and exhaustion, he had sat
down to die, was the ghastly find of a
fisherman on the banks of the Dickey
River today.
The disappearance from home of Mar
tin and Mathias Ertle, young Germans,
brothers, who resided on a ranch near
Mora postoffice, in the Quillayute Valley,
was reported two months ago. Then the
fact was ascertained by the neighbors
of the missing men that they bad been
gone from home for 30 days without
any one having knowledge of their
whereabouts. Search was organized
and maintained as long as there seemed
hope of finding the men. It failed to re
veal the slightest trace of them, and
opinion finally settled down to the be
lief that they had become lost in the
forest and were long since beyond human
aid.
M. T. Jones, a resident of the vicinity,
while fishing noticed the peculiar actions
of his dog. He followed the animal into
the woods a few yards, where he came
upon the body of a man in the position
described. Reporting the find to the
nearest neighbors, they got together a
party and visited the locality. It was
suspected the remains were those of one
Ertle brothers, and they were fully iden
tified as those of Martin by the clothing
and the mustache.
Strange to say a safety pin was the
only article of any kind found in the
clothing. At the feet of the corpse was
a walking stick which had dropped from
the dying man's hands, and near by, un
der a windfall, w«as a cave scooped out
by hand, in which Artie had evidently
spent the last night that he wa* alive.
No trace whatever has yet been found
of Mathias, the other missing brother,
and the supposition is that he and Mar
tin separated after becoming lost in the
woods and that Mathias met the same
fate as did Martin, and further that his
remains will some day be found as were
those of his brother.
Preaching.

Preaching is contrasted with talking.
The preacher is sent, he does not come
of himself, besides he has a specified
message to preach. Noah preached the
flood, Jonas the destruction of Nineveth,
John and Christ the kingdom of God,
Paul knew nothing but Christ and him
crucified.
One of the hardest things in this world
is to try to preach without being sent
of God. There was a man sent from
God whose name was John. How shall
they preach except they be sent ? Pray
ye therefore that the Lord of the harvest
will send reapers.
My preacher said that he went to
school with other young men, some be
came ductors, some lawyers, &c., and
he chose to be a preacher, and he could
not see why he should not live just as
well as any of them. He had no more
sense of being sent than a Chinaman,
nor did he ever have anything to preach.
How should the preacher he supported ?
The principle of the Christian religion is
free gift. God gave his son, the gift of
God is eternal life, the gift of God’s love.
If the preacher preaches a nward to the
righteous, he can’t reasonably expect a
free gift from those whom he neglects to
proffer the gift of God to.
The preacher is governed to a great
extent by the law of supply and demand,
he has to cater to his audience. If I de
mand that he hold up the Christ who
died for me, he has it to do just as far as
my influence goes. I would never make
a preacher because I say what I think,
the preacher is paid to sav what others
think.
The truth is hard to tell, while we are
children, what we eat goes to build up
our body, brain and heart, hut when a
boy comes to puberity, an unnatural
waste begins, the loss of vitality, brings
the sence of lost manhood, it appears
that it is for something we have done,
but every man has had this same evil to
contend with, stimulants being a tem
porary relief, such as liquor and opates,
but they soon lose their effects if we
rely on them. A natural cause requires
natural remedy.
