Gauntlet at Mayor Talmage

One side of a story is a I wavs plausible
until the other side is told, and as Ma vor
Talmage had such a small congregation
we did not deem it wise to answer Ilfs
accusations, Imt will do so now so
that the whole of the citizens can hear
and decide who is the most contemptible
person.
At the city council meeting re'erred to
the editor was given the ordinance to
read I m fore the meeting was called to
order. He read it down casually with
out ex|K*cting to lx asked his opinion
upon it off hand and without carefully
considering it. for it contained over half
a column of reading matter. Neither is
the editor aware that the mayor was
very anxious to have the editor’s opi
nion, for lutd he so expressed himself the
editor might have read in more carefully
and expressed himself. It seems remark
ably strange that the mayor should now
accuse the editor of refusing to give an
opinion.
When the citv council was
called to order the editor did not join in
the discussion nor was he asked to ex
press an opinion.
Another thing, the editor attended the
meeting as a newspaperman, and as such
it is plain to most everybody who have
watched our course of action, we have
purposely abstained from taking any
part at public meetings a nd ha ve held our
whist as much as possible at the city
council and other meetings. Although
that is directly opposite how other news
paper mtn in this citv act. we prefer to
keep mum on such occasions ami allow
attorneys hankers, business men and
others to advance the arguments thev
have read from time to time in the
columns of the H eadlight , as they did
at ihe meeting on Friday evening, which
amused the editor.
So Mayor Talmage told his audience
that the editor was a most contemptible
person for refusing to give his opinion
and then criticising the ordinance in his
newspaper.
As a newspaper men we
use oar own judgment when and how to
criticise matters of public importance,
and Mayor Talmage has no right to in
terfere with the freedom of the press ami
characterize our act as contemptible. It

city if the H eadlight man is to called
contemptible at a public meeting for
express an opinion in his newspaper on
a matter of that importance
Now, as to the criticism which makes
us so contemptible in the estimation of
Mayor Talmage.
We had forgotten,
when listening to the mayor when lie
undertook to “roast’’ us. how we had
criticised the ordinance, but since looking
the matter up, it was this ;
“There are two things in the ordinance
which passed the city council on Monday
evening to submit the bonding question
for a new water system to a vote of the
taxpavers that stands out conspicuous,
viz. : The power to borrow $58,000 and
its lack of any provisions to pay it off,
not even a sinking fund of $2000 a year
to wipe the indebtedness out by taxation
within the 30 years. Is the proposed
bonding system for a new water system
to be a repetition of the old and new
school building bonded indebtedness,
only greatly enlarged upon and a far
heavier load for the taxpayers of this citv
to pack ? It would seem so. But, then,
some people don't care a whoop how the
money is to be repaid as long as thev
can gratify their ideas and have the tax
payers vote to place their own heads
into a 30 years’ yoke of bondage. If for
no other reason, because the ordinance
does not provide for a sinking fund, the
taxpayers should consider well before

and with no money to pay off the prin
cipal.”
We ask anv fair minded person whe
ther they think this is contemptible criti
cism ? And whether Mayor Talmage
was justified in calling the editor con
temptible for acting as he did under the

law without exerting the dignity ol the

the law, and has done nothing to stamp
out one of the biggest curses that was
ever allowed to get foothold in Tilla
monk Citv—not that Mayor Talmage is
to be blamed for its introduction in
the citv, for it was a condition of
affairs he found when he first look office—
but allows it to remain, Ixing re elected
to office by those who do not want cer
tain la ws enforced.
Truly, some men can swallow a carnal
and strain at a knat when they have an
ax to grind or want to keep up the con
tinual clatter of "roasting’’ the H ead
light man.
It must be getting awfully
insipid to the public.

out the least provocation, at a public
meeting to characterise the editor of the
Headlight as a contemptible person

fa r minded public what it thinks of this

One evening
the mayor and the editor met in Mr
Browre’s store, and in the presence of
that prraoa, Mr. Talmage asked the
editor if he appointed him on the Com
mission whether he would accept. The
editor told the mayor that he was not
desirous of the appointment, for he n : a

taken such an active part in advocating

good |xrson to appoint, and ne wanted
to avoid all factional differences. It was
entirely at the solicilat'oii of Mr. Tal
mage, after a pleasant talk on matters of
a public nature, that the editor finally
consented and the mayor agreed to
make the appointment.

A week or so later, Mr. Talmage
called the editor into Ins office and said
lie was in an embarrassing position and
wanted to lx relieved ol the promise to
appoint, the editor on the Commission.
He gave as his reason that the meiiHxrs
ol the Commission would turn Ins re
commendation down by not confirming
the appointment of the editor, and he
wanted to be relieved of that embar
rassing position. The editor told the
mayor to appoint anyone else, tor he
had not sougnt the app Hutment, it it
would relit ic him ol any embarrass
ment.

l he.first person interviewed was Mr.
F. K. Beals, and in the presence of Mr
falmage, the editor asked him this
question :

Mr. Beals’ reply was :
“ No ; who said 1 would, 1 would
like to see Mr. Baker on the Commis

Mr. Beals expiess himself further on the
subject as we understand lie did so.
About the same kind of reply came
from all the other Commissioners, who
weieintown, with one exception, that
of Mr. Claude Thayer, who gave as his
reason that he did not think it was
policy for the mayor to appoint the edi
tor. That satisfied the editor that Mr.
i ha ver was the power behind the throne,
and lie alone was the person who raised
the objection to what xVlr. Talmage had
agreed and decided do. As to turning
the appointment down, the editor has
the word of the Commissioners that they
knew nothing about it, but, on the other
hand, would confirm it it it was made.
Truly, embarrassing, wasn’t it, for
Mr. Talmage, but the editor would have
been content to have let this incident
pass unnoticed had Mr. Tai nage not
made the break he did on Friday with
out the least provocation on the editor's
part, and as the editor is forced to take
up the gauntlet thrown down by the
mayor, lie does so reluctantly.
The editor does not loose his equalih-
rium on such occasions nor allow petty
personalities to control his actions, for
lie has been made the kicking post tor
tlie ‘’knockers’’ for quite a time, but with
futile effect.
The editor has always
breated Mayor Talmage with due cour
tesy, and it lie has allowed Mr. Thayer
to “dare” linn do what he made up his
mind to, we feel sorry that the mavor
has not more spunk and independence.

But as to-morrow is Christmas day
and we have not the slightest ill feeling
against Mayor Talmage. Mr. Thayer,
and the perpetual “ knockers,” we wish
them all a merry, merry Chiistmas and
a happy and prosperous new year.

Dairy Strippings.
Good roads and dairying are closely
connected when profit i« considered. The
question of time in going to and from
the factory is important. Often with
good roads not half the time is consum
ed as would be required with deep mud.
Where dairying has been carried on for
a length of time the roads show a great
improvement.
The largest creamery in the world is
located at Lincoln. Neb. It makes 7.000,-
000 pounds of butter annually. This is
an average of a ton and a half of butter
a dav, the churns running night and dav.

cream is brought 4*50 miles. There are
eighty skimming stations. Pour thou
sand hand separators are in use by its
patrons.

en. The temperature of wooden churns
can lie held at the desired point for some
time, usually long enough to churn a
